The Pros And Cons Of Stereotypes
A stereotype is “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing,” (en.oxforddictionaries.com) meaning how you perceive a person/group, mostly negative. Stereotypes have advantages and disadvantages, but for the most part they are disadvantages to the society and cause people to judge a person to quickly before they know them. An advantage of a stereotype is “it enables us to respond rapidly to situations because we may have had a similar experience before” (McLeod, Saul), and a disadvantage is “that it makes us ignore differences between individuals; therefore, we think things about people that might not be true” (McLeod, Saul). The term that is heard most for stereotyping a blond is “having a blonde moment.” In a recent study from Daily Mail Online it showed blondes to be more intelligent than people with brown or red hair. The study of just how smart blondes are showed “blonde haired women had an average IQ of 103.2” (Woollaston, Victoria), jumping past brunettes at 102.7 and red haired women at 101.2. Hillary Clinton is a well-known blonde woman in history even though some people have a difference of views, she did do great things for the American people. She is most known for her protest against child abuse, standing up for women who were in lower positions than men were, and running in the presidential election as the first female president. Hillary Clinton was not only the First Wife to Bill Clinton, but a New York Senator. While she was a Senator, Clinton helped Manhattan recover from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centers. Not only was the first female presidential candidate a blonde, so was the first female Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor. After significant research on blonde women that had their voices heard for the better of our nation, the stereotype of all blondes being dumb is obviously a mistaken
