The term lucid dreaming was created in 1913 by a Dutch author and psychiatrist named Frederik van Eeden. He collected and wrote down over 500 dreams, starting from 1898 and ending in 1913. Eeden discovered that after lucid dreaming, that you remember your dreams more vividly and clearly than a normal dream. He also discovered that there are many ways to start and control lucid dreaming with techniques he learned over the years. You can’t die from lucid dreaming, but you can have a wrecked sleep pattern. For example, sleep paralysis may occur when you wake up during a lucid dream. Sleep paralysis is when you’re in a state where you have the inability to move when you’re asleep. This doesn’t harm you, but you might build up high levels of anxiety that could lead to a panic attack. To overcome sleep paralysis, you need to relax your body and go back to sleep. Another negative impact is being stuck in a lucid nightmare, it may not be dangerous but it is scary. In a normal dream you don’t have any control over what happens, but in a lucid dream just remind yourself that it’s a dream and none of it is real. You can overcome the nightmare if you just realize that it’s just a dream and nothing permanent could happen to you.
