Younger Brother Sin vs. Older Brother Sin Luke 15:11-32 is one of the most famous parables in the Bible. It is the parable of the prodigal son. This parable is about a son who runs away with his inheritance, wastes all of it, and then comes back home to his father’s open arms. Tim Keller goes more in depth into this parable with his book The Prodigal God. In this book, Keller compares the two sons’ sins, “two brothers, each of whom represents a different way to be alienated from God, and a different way to seek acceptance into the Kingdom of heaven” (9). Throughout the book, comparisons can be made between the younger brother’s sin and the older brother’s sin. The younger brother was selfish and wanted his inheritance immediately so that he can go party. The older brother follows all of the rules to get things and doesn’t want his brother to come back. Throughout The Prodigal God, comparison can made between the two brothers’ sin in that both of their intentions are selfish and they both want control. Tim Keller’s book is more than just discussing the parable of the prodigal son. While the tradition seems to focus more on the younger brother and his sins, Keller goes more depth with the older brother and his faults, “Most readings of this parable have concentrated on the flight and return of the younger brother-the ‘Prodigal Son.’ That misses the real message of the story, however, because there are two brothers, each of whom represents a different way to be alienated from God, and a different way to seek acceptance into the Kingdom of heaven” (9).
The first way that the older brother and the younger brother’s sins are similar is that both of their intentions are selfish. With the younger brother, he wanted his inheritance early so he could go and party. “The young man humiliates his family and lives a self-indulgent, dissolute life. He is totally out of control. He is alienated from his father.” (39) This behavior

Father Brown and Brother Cadfael were both men of the church who were put into situations where they needed to solve some sort of crime. Unmistakably the two had similarities in how they solve the crime. Who would have been better to solve a crime than a man of God? They had their differences in how they did their job as well. Most of all, they had the biggest difference, which is the dissimilarity in what they believed. They didn’t solve the same crime, but how they did it was similar in certain ways.…

In this parable, one of the two sons left with half of his inheritance. After using it up and having nowhere to go, he saw the error of his ways and repented for his mistakes. The reaction of his father upset the other brother and complained why his brother receives such treatment after being such a disgrace. The reaction of the father and the two sons is an example of the Sacrament of Confession and pride. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the penitent must feel sorrow in order to go to confession. A priest who hears the confessions is like the father who ran to his son when he returned; they both forgive their children in a way from their faults after witnessing their struggle.…

Throughout the "The Rich Brother" Pete never criticizes God but never speaks as profoundly about God as his brother does. His brother Donald is represented as almost a religious zealot where as Pete is merely portrayed as a rich business man. In the bible Cain is less favored then his younger brother Abel because of his gift to his almighty God. God favored Abel because Abel gift was that of his first born lamb whereas Cain's gift was only part of his crop. Abel's sacrifice of his first born lamb showed his devotion and commitment to his God which lead to Abel becoming more favored in the eyes of his god. Peter as Cain is shown in a less favorable position with God then his brother Donald. In the story when Pete eventually picks up his brother at the service station Donald spilled some of his orange soda and Donald yells to him to wipe it up with his shirt "Try God" (809). Moreover, by telling Donald to wipe up the pop with the shirt, Wolff symbolically symbolizes Pete dragging God's name through the mud which further emphasizing Pete's lack…

Following Sonny’s release from prison, the narrator goes to visit Sonny for the first time; he describes their first moment together, “Yet, when he smiled, when we shook hands, the baby brother I’d never known looked out from the depths of his private life, like an animal wanting to be coaxed into the light” (40). In this moment, the narrator becomes overwhelmed with guilt that he wasn’t involved in Sonny’s early years much, but now feels as if he is responsible for his younger brother’s fate. Sonny is referred to as an “animal,” because he has just been released from prison, where he was trapped behind steel bars as if he were in a cage. This reference also emphasizes the more general feeling of being marginalized, not even being referred to as human. The phrase “waiting to be coaxed into the light,” shows how determined Sonny is to escape from the darkness that follows him. Nevertheless, his journey to the light will remain a conflicted gradual transition, indicated by the word, “coaxed”. The story maintains a religious undertone throughout, here specifically representing death in religion. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (Authorized King James Bible, 2 Corinth. 4.17-18). This verse from the bible applies directly to the phrase, “waiting to be coaxed into the light,” as “the light” often symbolizes heaven. The “momentary troubles” are represented by the hardships accompanied with marginalized Americans, but are “temporary” compared to the light only seen in the…

From the King James Bible, Jesus Christ is the speaker in “Parable of the Prodigal Son.” A parable is a simple story from which a moral or religious lesson can be drawn and are most commonly read within the New Testament. This parable is about a wealthy man and his two sons. The youngest son requests an early inheritance from his father with which he receives and goes on a journey. On that journey, the youngest son wastes all of the inheritance and pursues a career feeding pigs. In the meantime, a famine breaks out and the son begins to starve and his only food source is the food the pigs eat. After realizing he has nothing, the youngest son returns home to his father who is surprisingly forgiving and celebrates his return. When the oldest son returns home from work, he is furious to see that although the youngest son wasted money, a feast is still celebrated in his return. In the “Parable of the Prodigal Son” from the King James Bible there are certain questions critiquing the actions of the characters.…

He was distraught over the fact that appeasing the congregation meant “[deceiving] everybody in the church.” The story’s tone shifts from urgent to elated when “[waves] of rejoicing swept the place,” all the more for a good kid, such as himself, to feel guilty. With the combined reactions from the adults and how no harm came to the children, it was too easy to lie and join the bandwagon, leaving the question of what’s reality. Hughes expertly recounts, in detail, of the revival through his eyes, allowing readers to understand his point of view. Children often misread what they’re told, and in their confusion, subjecting them to the side with the…

Lastly I wanted to discuss my ideas for the actual material we will be performing. All I really have to work with is 22 verses that tell the story of the prodigal son very briefly. I was hoping to add a second story-line to the performance. It would take place when the brothers are still infants. The younger brother would be constantly doing bad things and causing trouble. When the father would come into the room it would appear that the older brother was to blame and he would be the one to get punished. This would add the final comedic twist to the story that will push it over the…

    1. Because Luke was a gentile Christian writing to a gentile audience, he wanted to show them that Jesus was loving and accepting of all people, not just Jews. To do this, Luke protrayed Jesus as someone who frequently interacted with "outsiders." His love to all people was unconditional, no matter their social status, gender, or place of origin; this implies to the gentile people that he will love them, no matter of the religion they were born into. Luke also protrays Jesus as a "flawed" character to furhtur promote this idea. Jesus' birth especially shows that he wasn't someone who fit into societies norms. He was lying in manger instead of a bed, not inside of a home, with parents that had many rumors going around about them, and he even had shepards visit him.…

Nothing is more wonderful than the birth of a baby. Babies are a symbol of life and love that a man and woman create together. It is heartbreaking when a man and woman just can’t seem to conceive a child, but with the medical advances today we have something called in vitro fertilization. The process of in vitro fertilization is not guaranteed to be 100% to always work but it definitely increases the chances of a woman giving birth to a baby. Now imagine that baby is sick or not healthy. Maybe that baby has a rare disease and there is little to no hope of him or her surviving. Is there anything you would not do to save your baby? What if it meant giving birth to another baby? Unfortunately this is a scenario that happens. Parents of terminally ill children make the decision to have another baby in order to save the child they already have. The babies are called “savior siblings”. This sounds like a great solution for the problem, but what about the new baby as it grows up? What are the risks and the down sides to creating savior siblings”?…
