The following sub-topics have been discussed in this compilation: * 1 – Islam & Astrology * 2 – Did Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) know the Unseen? * 3 – Why does Islam forbid prediction of the future through astrology and other sources like these? If we use these methods to find out what a person’s true personality is, is it haram? 1 – Islam & Astrology There are two related terms that are often confused with one another, astronomy and astrology. Astronomy refers to the science that is concerned with the observation of the motions of heavenly bodies and reducing these observations to mathematical order, while astrology refers to the study of the supposed effects the movements of these celestial bodies have on human affairs.
According to jurists, it is lawful to study astronomy, for it is useful in predicting the beginning of months and seasons, determining the direction of Prayer, and navigating. They agree that this branch of science be used in determining the beginning and end of the month of Ramadan.
As for astrology, this is haram (unlawful) and nothing but lies. The Unseen is known only by Almighty Allah.
Responding to the question, Dr. Husam al-Din Ibn Musa `Afana, a Professor of the Principles of Fiqh at Al-Quds University, Palestine, states the following:
“First of all, it is worth noting that the Arabs knew astronomy a long time ago. They would predict time through observing the movements of stars.
According to the scholars of Shar`iah, there are two terms confused in many people’s minds when it comes to dealing with the question in hand. These terms are astronomy and astrology. Astronomy is the science that deals with studying the movements of the celestial bodies and reducing observations to mathematical order. That science is useful in

The Mayans and the Aztecs continually watched the stars as a way of predicting the future and interpreting religious phenomena. The Mayans built a number of observatories in their various city states, with a notable one in the city of Chechen Itza. Through the careful and detailed observations the Mayans made, they were able to accurately to predict the transit of Venus as well as construct a clock that, by some accounts, was more accurate than today’s atomic clock. The Mayans furthermore used the stars to schedule sacrifices, write the Mayan Codices, and orient buildings. The impact of celestial alignment on culture is not unique to this area; archaeoastronomy focuses on how ancients used astronomy around the world, in places like Stonehenge and the great pyramids in Egypt. The Aztecs likewise used the stars as a means of scheduling religious holidays that required human sacrifice, as well as to predict the future and to orient pyramids, just…

As a professed Christian, I have often been guilty of looking at horoscopes and once for a lark, going to a psychic. However; even when I was indulging in each of these activities I felt a little squeamish. I was taught to believe that God alone knows our futures. By reading the horoscopes and going to the psychic, I was not being true to my religious convictions. As Christians, we have to be careful to stay away from anything that opposes biblical teaching. When we indulge in something that is superstitious it…

For the Egyptians, astronomy went beyond wonder and legend. The Egyptians began by focusing on certain gods, represented by the stars, and used them for legends/myths/stories about the daily lives of those gods, etc. Egyptians later began using astronomy in nearly everything they did. From a religious aspect, to building an amazing structure, where a certain light can be seen from it maybe only once a year. It was not only the night sky that was important to the Egyptians. Every being in the sky was important to them, including the horizon, the positioning of the sun, the moon, and the stars and planets. Ex; once the Sun had set, it…

This view of divination, as a system of thinking and reasoning, is closely related to the rules that govern a mathematicians work. As author Douglas Hofstadter writes "proofs are demonstrations within fixed systems of propositions," similarly, divination sessions result in conclusions stemming from a series of codified techniques. (Hofstadter 26) Altering any of these standardized methods in either situation would cause different outcomes would occur. Hence, by drawing parallels to the underlying backbone of the what divination really is, in turn, the definition of mathematics is also enlarged and…

As stated before, the premises of both astrology and mythology are so general that any outcome satisfies the idea at hand. This is one major pillar of science. Astrology and mythology have shown zero ideas that could be tested and proven true. Science requires an individual, scientist, or researcher create predictions of an idea. Then they must use observation, research, and experiments to test that prediction and falsify the idea. Nothing in science is ever considered to be 100% factual or true. That is why astrology and mythology can not be categorized as science. In an individual's mind, their belief system or religion is 100% true. Individuals do not test their belief systems using evidence.…

To believe that you can determine the future because of how the moons, the stars, Venus, Pluto, Saturn, etc are randomly aligned at a certain time is completely ludicrous. And the fact that that people feel so strongly about the issue that they will, in fairly large numbers, bombard a scientific magazine with tons of letters simply because somebody writes an article questioning the authenticity of the subject is insane. However, as passionately as these people feel about the subject I definately wouldn't call how they feel to be "religious" as Mr. Bok seemingly…

The prophecy is lawful knowledge of the future divination, its irrational counterpart, is the unlawful. Magic aims to do and divination aims to know. Divination is found in every country and is practically as old as the human race. Cicero said that there is no nation, civilized or barbarian that does not believe that there are signs of the future and people who interpret them. Cicero had divided divination into natural and artificial. The natural included dreams and oracles which the diviner was a passive subject of inspiration and the power was supposed to be then and there within him. The artificial embraced all the foretelling signs that were found in nature or produced by a man. The diviner was active and the divination apparently came from his own skills and observations. Divination expressed invocation of spirits, embraced the dreams, signs or wonders, necromancy and divination with implied invocation through signs and movements in the objects of nature. Dreams mean those who expressly prepared and prayed for with hope of intercourse with God or the…
