Authority and Identity usually lead to compliances and conformity and these techniques usually occur in real life situation too. To test out if human being would lose their moral and social values when they lost their individuality, Philip Zimbardo conducted an experiment in 1971 to see how readily people would conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a role-playing exercise that simulated prison life (Zimbardo - Stanford Prison Experiment, 2008). This experiment was called The Stanford Prison Experiment and it was conducted at Stanford University. While the real life situation that was being mentioned, connected and relevant to Zimbardo’s experiment is the Abu Ghraib prison abuses. Abu Ghraib prison was a U.S. Army detention center for…

Psychological studies are relatively new as far as the history of scientific research is concerned. As with anything, the rules for these experiments have evolved and become what they are today only through past circumstances. There are some main experiments in past psychological history, which became a true turning point and reasons for ethical guidelines to be placed. These experiments include the medical atrocities during WWII, the Tuskegee syphilis project, Milgram’s obedience studies, and Zimbardo’s Prison Experiment. Although the participants in Zimbardo’s study were informed of the situation they would have to endure, there was still a significant amount of psychological damage done.…

Have you ever noticed that certain people act and behave differently when they are with crowds versus when they are alone? Being in a large crowd can really impact individual to act in a certain way that they seem to fit in with the group and sometimes do things more anonymous as it is in a large crowd. Both Zimbardo and Le Bon believe that bystanders are less responsible and more likely to commit violence than when people are alone. Philip Zimbardo is a psychologist and a professor at Stanford University; he researches the cause of evil in people by doing a Stanford prison experiment. Zimbardo states about how evil can cause good people easily by the peers that they are surrounded by and the culture and traditional way changes can affect people…

Frequently mugged, pickpocketed, and targeted by bigots, Dushrab grew furious with the crime and disorder of Rullum, and vowed to fight it. He became jaded and slow to trust during his young years. Dushrab met the love of his life when applying for the city guard, she was a fellow Half-Orc named Shelur. After his initial denial, Shelur taught Dushrab how to fight with maces and shields. Dushrab later managed to earn a job as a city guard, and they grew closer as they frequented a tavern near the docks called The Angry Tyrant. Meeting the sailors wandering through town, they came across an old and wise, but troubled dwarven sailor. His tales of the army inspired Dushrab to enlist, using his fighting prowess for a cause greater than being a city guard, but Shelur did not want to accompany him. She had nobody but him now, after her parents were murdered in cold blood by the bigots who inhabit this city. After crossing the sea, Dushrab fought in a battle against the Tiefling Empire, and Dushrab had to make a quick decision to save a fallen comrade and friend, or stop the conjuring of a fireball onto his fellow soldiers. He chose his friend, who ended up dying anyway, and has regretted the selfish decision ever since. After leaving the army, he had a great burden of regret on his shoulders, and found that the only way he could forgive himself was by helping people in the name of the god Heironeous. He became a disciple of his god, and since then has become an adventurer, never leaving behind any comrade, he would rather die than let one of his own…

In your life you will always be woken up by surprises that change your life for good or you will have internal strength to get over. You will always get thrown a curve ball and either you dodge it or go with it. Both How the Garcia girls lost their accents and “Hostage” are examples of trials and tribulations that shape our lives. My theme is about the challenges that occur in your life and how it either changes your life forever or how you have internal strength and learn how to get over different challenges that come your way. In How the Garcia girls lost their accent the two main characters Yolanda and Sophia struggle with internal strength they may or may not have. Them going to America and changing their ways, then returning to the Dominican Republic and them not being accepted, they had to have internal to…

Most people desire some sort of power. Whether it is political power or economic power, this yearning runs our society. Some people use their power to benefit others, and other person inappropriately use their power to degrade and diminish. As explored in the Stanford Prison Experiment, Philip Zimbardo states people change with they are given “power without oversight” (Zimbardo, The Psychology of Evil, TedTalk). Though the students were considered “good apples,” the combination of situation and the system caused the guards to lose their identities and to abuse their power in inhumane ways. The results of the experiment were derived many observations and conclusions about the subjects; however, Zimbardo’s switch between running the experiment…

The students involved in the Zimbardo Prison Experiment were not cruel people, nor were they truly sadistic. When given the roles as prison guards and prisoners, their behaviors changed dramatically. As prison guards, normally friendly students acted as prison guards under the warden. Under the authority of the guards, the students with the roles of prisoners acted unnaturally and did as the guards told them. Similarly, the soldiers in Germany under Hitler's command did as they were told and acted as they did, not because they were bad people, but because of their positions in German society. They were soldiers and did as a German soldier under Hitler would do. Neither prison guard nor soldier acted aggressively because of their own personalities,…

This study was conducted by Professor Phillip Zimbardo at Stanford University in 1971. Zimbardo wanted to find out if a situation can control the person or can an individual’s beliefs, attitude and values would allow one to rise above their current situation. He wanted to look more in-depth in the behavioral and sociological consequences in the roles of the guard and prisoner. Also, he wanted to find out why and how social situations can overwhelm people. In order to find study subjects, Zimbardo advertised in the paper for healthy, male students and offered $15 a day for up to two weeks. His subjects were predominately white, middle class students with no history of drug use or a criminal record. The basement of Stanford’s psychology department…
