The Prince and the Servant
THE PRINCE AND THE SERVANT

The servant and the prince were like two peas in a pod even though the prince was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and the servant was born with chicken feed. The king had a very hard time with that because he was a fat cat. It was like a bolt from the blue when the prince asked the king to buy the servant new clothes, the king chewed up the scenery at that. The prince said that he and the servant were going to hit the road. The king was down in the mouth. He didn’t know what to do. He felt like he was in the doghouse. The king let them go out of the clear blue sky. So the servant and the prince set off. They were up until the eleventh hour walking away from the castle. The prince felt like a fish out of water because he was out of the castle for so long. The prince wanted to drop the servant like a hot potato, but he didn’t. The servant led them to London. He said we had to look for what sounded like a shack. It would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Every time we thought we found it we were barking up the wrong tree. The prince got hot under the collar but when they got there he was tickled pink. The prince felt home sick so he said that there is more than one way to skin a cat and that he was going home. When he got home the king jumped down his throat but was glad to have him home. After that the king and prince always saw eye to eye.

Machiavelli was a Florentine man of many skills. He was a renowned politician, author, and philosopher during the Renaissance, whose views and opinions affect the way people still think today. The Prince is his most famous work and in it he essentially states that humans are “ungrateful, fickle, deceptive and deceiving”. For that reason, a leader should rule through fear rather than love. However, what Europeans needed during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries were compassionate rulers. They were already frightened and disunited during the middle ages, thus adding a fearful leader to the mix would not help citizens feel safer.…

Abd al Rahman Ibrahima was a muslim slave who was captured when defeated in a war. It all took place in small Southern American town, whom Ibrahim’s father befriended a white man (Prince Among Slaves, by Terry Alford). Ibrahim is translated as Abraham. Abraham was known as a prince. His father was a king of the cattle raising people. Abraham was enslaved by family in Natchez, Mississippi. On August 18, 1789, Abraham was purchased by Thomas Foster. While Abraham was captured, leaving his wife and two sons, he had no idea of what freedom was going to mean to him. He became known as the “Prince” because that’s how Thomas named him. Abraham at first tried to gain his freedom by offering gold to the Foster family to be released. But Thomas Foster was not interested in his offering of gold. He wanted Abraham for him. Abraham then later stopped trying and was the slave for the Fosters for many years. Freedom to Abraham had no meaning as he didn’t know when he would be free. According to the text Prince among slaves he was a “negro bruto.” While being a slave, Ibrahima refused to do what the Jalunke was expected to do. The work was antithetical and below Abraham’s cast. He refused to work and not go to field. Thomas then was infuriated and due to Abraham’s defiance in return he was whipped. “The bonds of servitude lay heavy upon him,” wrote Major Steve Power in the Memento(1897). Although Abraham lived many years as a slave and spent many years without his family he stayed strong and held on to his Muslim faith. Upon being set free Abraham expressed what he has found, “what indeed might be found by anyone, that happiness does not depend on ones rank” (Prince among Slaves). The meaning for freedom for him was more of what he learned and experienced as a slave. He didn’t know when he would be free, he basically made his mind that he was going to be a slave with no saying to what he believed.…

The relationships between servants and masters closely reflect the gender relationships in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Lucentio and Tranio's relationship as master and servant is an ideal of the Renaissance era. Tranio risks taking the place of his master because of his love for him and Lucentio always treats him with kindness and respect, almost like an equal. Lucentio's relationship with Bianca reflects his role with Tranio: Bianca shows respect for Lucentio as he cherishes her and treats her with kindness. However, Bianca fails to complete her role as an ideal wife by obeying her husband. however Petruchio and his servant, Grumio, have a much different relationship. Grumio often disobeys his master, while Petruchio insults and even beats him. These roles are echoed in Petruchio's relationship with Katherine.…
