The Presidency:Focus of Leadership In The Presidency-Focus of Leadership, Clinton Rossiter discusses the position of the president within office. His article’s purpose is to answer the question: For what men and groups does the president provide leadership? Rossiter does this by further explaining seven leadership roles the president maintains. First, the president is leader of the Executive Branch. Within this role, the president provides the public with common guidance. With that said, the president is held responsible for the ethics, loyalty, efficiency, frugality, and responsiveness of the public’s wants and wishes. Therefore, a president who does not lead Congress to the best of his ability or does not get along with Congress, will be considered a national liability. Fourth, the president is leader of his party. This position is where the president conjures much of his real power. Known as the political boss, in order to persuade Congress and maintain a loyal and united administration, the president must take strong part and be knowledgeable in topical political events. Fifth, the president is leader of public opinion. Therefore, the president acts as a moral spokesmen for the American public. This role needs the president to be able to: sense the moods of the public crowd, practice shrewd economic status in his appearance, be aware of his power of persuasion and demand in speech, and appeal to American traditions through Christian morality.
