    To start off, lets begin with the practice of Taoism. What Taoism is in a nutshell is based on the ideas of “The Tao,” or as it is translated, “The Way.” “One of the basic observations was that the Way of nature, and nature itself is difficult to discern“ (1). Many of the practices used in Taoism are through the Tao Te Ching (dow-day-ching) written by Lao-tzu, which explains many of the Taoist’s concepts. “And what is most important, [Lao-Tzu] tried to describe the Tao, though it is impossible to explain in plain words what is beyond our conscious perception“ (2). Also, one of the strangest ideas from Taoism is that there is no practices of worshipping a god or gods and goddesses. Generally as westerners, we find this different because Taoism is considered a religion, yet it goes against one of our key ideas about religions.…

    Power is dominance. Power is influence. Power is a virtue and power is a vice. In the poem entitled “Ozymandias,” author Percy Shelley brings to life a tale of power and how it holds up, or fails to hold up, through time. The poem describes the wreckage of a stone statue built by a past ruler; “And on the pedestal these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings” (9-10). Through the following lines, “Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!” (11), it is clear that Ozymandias was a sort of conqueror. However, Ozymandias’ rule did not withstand time and, as Shelley states, “Nothing besides remains” (12). Through the wording of these four lines, author Percy Shelley is able to clearly express the theme of the poem, which is that of tyrants and temporary power.…

    The Power of One

    The Power of One is a cinematic masterpiece which was based on the inspiring novel by Bryce Courtenay. Set in a world torn apart from racism; where man subjugates his fellow country man and liberty remains evasive. The director, John G. Avildsen has utilized a range of filmic techniques to depict to malevolence of racial prejudice. The protagonist of this film, PK is an English boy who is raised in a society plagued with racism. In the beginning of this film, PK’s is narrating some events of his life; John. G starts the screenplay with PK saying, “I was born with the songs of Zulu rainmakers in my ears”. The first scene of the movie instantly lures the audience’s attention with PK’s adorable voice, blended with an indigenous African tune in the background. Furthermore; the introduction of PK’s dark skinned friend, who is sitting beside him and playing the ivory (white) and Ebony (black) keys on the piano is a strong dissimilarity witnessed by the audience. Despite no racial scenes are presented in the beginning, it definitely sets the rest of the movie in pace with presenting one of the core themes of this novel, ‘the power of one’.…
