The Positive and Negative Effects of Technological Advancements
Cez Danielle M. Lagbas

Technological advancement, with no doubt, is such a huge impact in shaping the world. As humans, unlike any other living creature, we have the ability to use our mind for reasoning. Reason is the capacity for consciously making sense of things, for establishing and verifying facts, and changing or justifying practices, institutions, and beliefs based on new or existing information.[1] With this power, we are able to imagine things, and with our clever minds, we are also able to create these imaginations. Creators, inventors, experimenter, maker, founder, innovator, pioneer – these are what we call the people behind every technology existing at present. Invention has made the world what it is today. It absolutely helped our society develop into a much better world. This whole aspect of invention is what we see as technology. Technology is the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, methods of organization; in order to solve a problem, improve a pre-existing solution to a problem, achieve a goal or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments.[2] Technological advancement is responsible for many changes as well in world population, life expectancy, education levels, material standards of living, and the nature of work, communication, healthcare, war, and the effects of human activities on the natural environment. Not just these conditions are affected, but also our society and our individual selves.[3]

Computers, telephones, cars, television---all these gadgets and inventions have only just come about within the past century. Being such recent additions to society, people surely survived before their creation; sadly, there are rarely any people today that understand what that was like. Hardly ever are people not on their smartphones anymore, whether they’re texting their friends, looking something up, or using social media. Whatever the reason, people are constantly relying on technology to do something for them nowadays. The author Ray Bradbury emphasizes this in his short stories, “The Pedestrian” ,“The Veldt”, and “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains”, where the main characters rely so heavily on their technologically innovative houses to feed, entertain, and aid them in their daily lives that all the outcomes are anything but positive. Negative consequences like these aren’t fictional like most of the components of Bradbury’s stories, though; scientists have already found many…

They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world.” I have experienced technological advancements by working with any new software on a computer and the constantly evolving world of phones and computer, so I have some mixed feelings in agreement to both views. It is through this I have learned that technology evolving can be good but it does, at times, come with heavy burdens and consequences for the…

In my opinion, technologies best achievement has to be in the field of medicine. All patient’s files are kept on a computer and can be accessed on a database from anywhere in the hospital. This saves a significant amount of time and eliminates the room for human error. Diseases are complex, and various parts of the human body can be even more complex. Therefore, technology has brought about an immense benefit to both the physician and the patient. It has given people the ability to walk, reduced the number of fatalities in surgery, promotes a faster and more accurate diagnosis, and increases the life expectancy of the average person. All these improvements in medicine and health care owe credit to technology in some form or another.…

During the last 30 years medicine has reached new frontiers and many new breakthroughs that benefit the public on regular bases. Now what were once unknown diseases that could not be treated such as cancer are now able to be treated. In consequence of technology evolving and becoming more high tech, machines that allow chemo therapy and radiation are available. I am very grateful for this breakthrough in science because my grandfather had cancer and because of radiation the cancerous cells were killed and now he is able to live a long and healthy life in the sun. Another benefit that technology had given us in science is beneficial to deaf people. Hundreds of years ago these disabled people had no hope of recovering any hearing, but now there are hearing aids, and surgeries that replace impaired parts of the ear. Surgeries now are available to anyone at any time, we might take this a common action now but a hundred years ago surgeries were dangerous and done raw without any sedatives.…

    1. Technology has not only enhanced my educational experience at SUNY Canton, but has made it possible. I work full-time at Public Health for St. Lawrence County. I wouldn’t be able to attend full-time classes and work at my job. I also have a part-time job at St. Lawrence University—which couldn’t be possible if I wasn’t able to take the online courses offered by SUNY Canton. The online courses allow me to fit the classes into my schedule, instead of the other way around. That is uniquely appreciated. My degree is almost completely online. That is a tremendous change from even 10 years ago.…
