The Pledge of Allegiance is a symbol of our country that represents the cost paid through the sacrifice of many brave souls. There are some groups who do not want to say it because they think it is an act of idolatry to say a pledge to a physical object and to state that we are one nation under God. The flag is not what we are pledging to as much as what the meaning behind the flag represents. The flag represents perseverance, justice, the states, and the freedoms that we have. No American should take this symbol of our country in any disrespectful way, such as burning it in protest to our country. On September 7, 2016, in Montgomery, West Virginia three athletes on the West Virginia University of Technology’s volleyball team mimicked professional athlete Colin Kaepernick and knelt during the national anthem. These girls, in an attempt to show their beliefs, crossed the boundary between standing for what they believed in and disrespecting the country in which they live. It is not only disrespectful to the country but also discourteous to the brave men and women who served our country. Many people die every day to preserve the rights given to us by this great nation, but we take for granted the rights that we have been given because most do not know what it is like to live without these rights. There are many other examples of other athletes disrespecting the Anthem. Professional athletes need to use their resources to educate American citizens about the equalities of life, not by disgracing the flag and the anthem which represent unity.
