One of the biggest problems with film and television today is the overuse of darkness. Not just in a visual sense, but tone-wise. Movies like “Man of Steel” take properties that would otherwise be considered lighthearted and turn the protagonists, setting, and overall mythos into colorless, desolate shells of what they used to be. Though this is often a downgrade, there are a few cases in which this approach works. Take the CW show “Riverdale” as an example. It takes the goofy “Archie” franchise and puts a dark spin on it that stays faithful to what Archie is at it’s core, but doesn’t take it too far to the point where it becomes unrecognizable.
