The Outsiders was a book written by S.E. Hinton in 1967 and tells the life of greasers. The main Character’s name is Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is a greaser and life isn’t easy for him. They have a gang that consist of 8 people. One day Pony learns that, “Things are rough all over,” (Hinton, 35.) He learned this from his new friend Cherry valance,(A soc) and ends up learning that both greasers and socs. are just normal people. He learned this over a week of losing two of his best pals. Her drunk boyfriend tried to kill them, and Johnny, Ponyboy’s best pal, ends up killing the drunk soc. They run away to a church and hide for four days until Pony’s other best pal, Who he doesn’t even like that much, comes and …show more content…
Ponyboy and Johnny go and save the kids. Johnny unfortunately didn’t make it out in time. They still got him, but he was only alive for about one more day. Dallas and Ponyboy go to see Johnny in the hospital and Johnny’s last words are, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold,” (Hinton,148.) There is also a movie as well as a book.
In the book, Ponyboy curtis starts out by saying, “When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home,” (Hinton, 1). Ponyboy starts walking home and gets jumped by a gang of socs. He was in a daze when his brothers and rest of the crew come to rescue him. His over protective brother, Darrel, was pretty upset with him. After, him and his friend Dally, decide to go to the movies with Johnny on Friday. There they see two socs. from school named Cherry and Marcia. Dally starts saying inappropriate words to try to impress them and look cool. Cherry tells him to get lost. He goes and buys some cokes and goes to bother them again. He was going to hurt them and Johnny says don’t. After, Cherry’s drunk boyfriend and his crew get mad at Cherry and Marcia for leaving them. It starts out with him writing an essay, the same way. Instead of starting out being beat up, it just starts where he is at a drive in movie with Cherry and Marcia. The characteristics of Dally being described is different too. The events that seemed be really important in the book, sort of just “happened” in the movie. Also when Dally tried to take Cherry out and she just said, “Get lost hood!” (Coppola, The Outsiders) Like the part when Cherry says, “Things are rough all over.” They didn’t mention a lot of things that were in the book. At the end, it showed him writing again. Despite these few little things from the movie, there were many similarities. There was still the part with the rumble and a lot of other things. Darry was big and tough too. Also, the church where Johnny . Like when they went to Dally for some help. In these ways it was similar. In conclusion, the outsiders is different because of acting skills, and mostly time. The book might take a reader about two, maybe three days to read depending on skill level. Obviously, the book can’t take two or three days long. The differences are mostly ok because the movie was still a lot like the book despite characteristic looks, and settings. Other than these few things, the Outsiders will always be a great original by S.E.
