The Old Man and the Sea was written by Ernest Hemingway. Some people may think it is a very basic book or easy reading. The book had deeper meaning and a lot depth. Hemingway used lots of symbolism, the theme of loneness, and the imagery of the lions on the beach to write his book.
There are certain symbols we can detect and are foreshadowed throughout the book. The bird symbolized the little boy, Manolin, visiting the old man and gave him comfort. The narrator says “The bird made the stern of the boat and rested there. Then he flew around the old’s man head and rested on the line where he was comfortable” (Hemingway 45). The bird saw the old man and had pity toward him and offer him some company. “How old are you? The old man asked the bird. Is this your first trip?” (Hemingway 45). Lions are usually seen as brave and fierce creatures and live in desert. The beach is viewed as a place to rest and calm down. That is a really strange image. When combined the author stressed the important relationship of human meaning of love and hate or death and life.
