Samuel Johnson once said, “Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.” In this inspirational novella by Ernest Hemingway Santiago shows an astonishing amount of perseverance. The Old Man and the Sea takes place in Cuba in the 1940s. Santiago, often referred to as the old man, is an old fisherman who has ran out of luck. He hasn’t caught a fish in 84 days when he decides to go out a little farther than usual.
