The Notorious Jumping Frog Of Poker Flat Analysis
A jumping frog, a deuce of clubs nailed to a tree, and gamblers all come from two very different yet similar stories. “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain and “The Outcast of Poker Flat” by Bret Harte have similar and different regionalistic qualities.
The narrators in the “Notorious Jumping Frog of Calavaras County” and “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” have different regionalistic qualities. “ In compliance with… garrulous old Simon Wheeler and inquired after… and I hereunto append the result.” (Twain 660) The narrator in “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calavaras County” is a well educated man who learns from watching other people which is an important quality in Regionalistic stories. However, in “ The Outcasts of Poker Flat” the narrator is not the smartest …show more content…
“The Outcasts of Poker Flat” had a thief, “But turning to where Uncle Billy had been lying, he found him gone.” (Harte 679). Along with a thief they had a widow and a woman accused of being a witch, “...part consisted of a young woman familiarly known as “The Duchess,” another who had won the title of “Mother Shipton”...” (Harte 676). Along with “The Outcasts of Poker Flat”, “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calavaras County” has regionalistic characters. “... if he could get anybody to bet on the other side, and if he couldn’t hr’d change sides.” Jim Smiley would bet on anything. He was a major gambler and in this area at this time period, there were a lot of major gamblers; just like the gambler in “The Outcasts of Poker Flat.” Both stories include the regionalistic quality of being concerned with characteristics of the region not on an individual. “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calavaras County” and “ The Outcasts of Poker Flat” both contain regionalistic qualities that are similar, yet they have qualities that are different. Without these characteristics we would not be able to classify these stories as regionalistic

    Local color or regional writing is when an author writes a piece of work that depicts a realist view of a certain area (book 12-13). In a local color literary work, the author writes about an area’s customs, beliefs, and ideals by using the spoken language and society’s actions (book 12-13).
