The Nightmare Before Christmas Film
Final film Critique

Introduction to Film English 225
Instructor: S \ The movie I chose to critique is Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. The story is an animated musical that puts in a world where Halloween is always celebrated but also gives you a brighter side of the joy in the Christmas holiday. Although the movie is not directed by Tim Burton, Henry Selick brings an animated holiday musical to the big screen. Unlike other holiday movies like Rudolph the Red nose reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. The Nightmare before Christmas has a wide variety of misfit characters and scenarios that may not be very holiday friendly to the younger audience. For example there is a scene where Jack the Skellington (the pumpkin king) wants to kidnap “santy claus” and take over Christmas day. Jack is the main character that has many ideas for Christmas and means well but are not always the best plans. With Tim Burton’s ideas, Henry Selick took Tim’s ideas and visions and was able to bring the creative vision and imaginative characters, sketches and drawings and bring them alive and vibrant. In 1993 “The Nightmare before Christmas” became a legendary masterwork with great animation, songwriting and storytelling.

“The Nightmare before Christmas” tells a story of a Pumpkin king named Jack Skellington from Halloween Town. That finds a magical portal that opens into the town of Christmas. Jack has never seen this town before or has not a clue what Christmas is. Being bored “with the same ol things” Jack decides he wants to celebrate Christmas and also include the citizens of Halloween Town. Halloween town is filled with of course Halloween monsters, Vampires, werewolves, goblins, witches, ghosts and other unidentified monsters. Jack is the leader that brings the Halloween Town citizens altogether for a big celebration on Halloween. Unfortunately as much as Jack loves Halloween and loves the participation of the citizens he is getting tired and

When jack returned home to Halloween Town he tried to report his findings to the people of his land but dispite his best efforts they were very confused their ethnocentric minds could not grasp a culture so strange to them. Like in the case where jack discribes to them the stalkings and they wish to know if there is still a foot inside because this would be the norm for them. The people of Halloween Town had never experienced any things like these, they had just been enculturized differently. When assigned their tasks to recreate cristmas they altered what they were told based on what they felt would improve them. For example the little duck toys were fitted with sharp teeth and gilded in blood stains and bullet wounds. They had to make there tasks culturaly relative to them other wise they just seemed silly and useless if a present did not inspire horror and disgust it obviously was not a proper present.…

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a well-known poem by Dr.Seuss that first evolved into a cartoon and then a feature length movie. In order to make that happen, there had to be a lot of changes and expansion to the original poem. Some of the critical areas that had to be addressed were the plot, the characters, setting, and dialogue.…

The most recent 2001 film by Universal pictures, produced by Ron Howard, has similarities, yet there are many differences in the movie plot. The poem’s similarities are the basis for the movie adaptation. The movie’s differences help to round out the characters and plot, describe character motivations, and enhance the entertainment value.…

One of the rudest person I've ever known was the Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The reason why I think he is rude is because he actually threw a christmas tree at someone and he wrapped a little girl in gift wrap and then left her there like a christmas present. He also stole everyone's presents. At the end if the movie the Grinch had a change of heart and gave all the presents back. That is why I think he is the rudest person.…

“Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square.” This environment as Scout Finch accurately describes is not the best or conducive place for young children, loud noises, and games. In the same way as the children, the adults of the novel played games that came from their imaginations, and they themselves are the ones who provided the fear for everyone. As most children do Jem, Scout, and their newly-found friend Dill find amusements to make the days pass by with excitement. When they first met Dill at the beginning, the day’s play is in the backyard. The implication is that it becomes routine for them to play and that each day brings a different experience. When Dill joins them in their daily adventures, they begin to create more elaborate activities. Many days they spent improving the treehouse, and acting out parts of plays by Oliver Victor Appleton, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. There games of Tom Swift the Rover Boys, and The Ghost are the sources of their pleasures for hours and days upon end. Once these games seem rot and overplayed they decide to make Boo Radley come out. Thus the “Boo Radley”, plays begin. These plays are simply for amusement in the end, they teach Jem, Scout, and Dill lessons about respect, courage, and understanding. The “Boo”, games begin with a simple dare that Jem has to carry out in order to gain respect from his sister and friend. Scout and Jem both learn about courage through the first Boo game they invented by testing their levels of fear.…
