The Nightmare
It was a cold rainy day. Droplets of water trickled down the foggy window, and I knew immediately that it was gently drizzling outside. As I was slowly extricating myself from bed that morning, I wondered, how did I wake up? I never woke up in the morning by myself. Usually, I would only arise from my lazy slumber after hearing my mother’s “morning call”. Those thoughts left me and I continued on my routine. As usual, I went into the bathroom to bathe, brush my teeth and after that, put on my school uniform. When I was ready to have my breakfast, I shot a quick glance at the clock on the wall. It screamed 7.00 a.m.! Late! I am late to school! I ran out of my room frantically in search of my mother as she prepares my breakfast every morning. Something was just not right, and I could not ignore this sinister feeling that I was having.
Where was my mother? She did not inform me anything yesterday and she did not even leave me a note. Now, that was weird. My mother is not the kind of person who forgets things. “Well, maybe something came up and she is solving it,” I thought. As I was obviously rushing for time, I quickly grabbed two slices of bread from the dining table and stuffed them in my mouth. Gobbling the dry bread down my throat was choky, but I did not have a choice. After a few gulps of mineral water, I hastened and raced to the bus stop. It did not take long to catch a bus. I was lucky that there was even one to catch!
It was another eerie experience in the bus. The bus driver glared at me with pure menace. Things were feeling weirder as my friends who were in the same bus deliberately ignored me when I called them. Whatever the reason, I did not care much. I was practically trying to avoid thinking negatively about everything that happened on that day. And it seemed like I was giving up….
Friends and teachers were not behaving naturally in school. As I walking into the school compound, approaching the canteen, I was given a slap on my back. Worst was when

Today I was filled to the top with euphoria because mother promised me she would take m to London for my birthday. I woke up abnormally early and washed my face with cold water and put on my favourite polka-dotted dress. I fixed my bed sheets and sprayed a small amount of perfume onto my clothes. I glanced at my pocket watch and found that it was already five o’clock; it would take two hours to get there. I raced down the stairs and shoved a few spoons of rice into my mouth and sprinted back upstairs to awake my sleeping mother.…

Most people think nightmares are nothing more. Just a simple nightmare to wake up from in the morning. Just a bad dream that will be gone by the time they eat breakfast. But this isn’t true. With every nightmare, comes a meaning. Nightmares have a meaning behind them, and a reason for starting.…

But on this particular night, a humid night at that, there was absolutely no sound to be heard. Not even the squeal of a tyre edging around the street corner, or the cackle of an old man passing by. Feeling the aching in my wrists turn to a sharp pain, I peered down at the several plastic bags that I was holding; full of the essential shopping that I had gone out to get last minute for dinner. One of the bags (the one that was hurting my wrists) was clearly overfilled, but I couldn’t do anything about that, not now, in the middle of the street. Letting out a heavy sigh, I carried on walking, reaching carelessly into my pocket to clasp my phone. In the humidity, it felt lovely to have the cold, metal block against my hands. I pulled it out, feeling around in the darkness around me for the switch to turn it on with. I paused, under a spot in which the moonlight was beaming down upon on the road. Underneath the only source of light in the pitch black city, I checked my phone for any messages or calls that we important. There was nothing, apart from one message from my sister telling me to buy her some magazines. I hadn’t and since I had already come out of the shop and had begun my walk home, I wasn’t going to go back just for her sake. Feeling even hungrier as the time sped past, I decided that it would probably just be better to go home so that I could eat as quickly as possible. My stomach however, had other ideas. The loud rumble that came from deep inside it, suggested that I should eat preferably sooner rather than later. Ignoring it, I crouched down and scooped up my plastic shopping…

Everything was loud. The overstuffed bus of children was leaving the school parking lot for its normal route of sudden stops, unforgiving bumps, and of course, transporting students to their destinations. Opposite from every other child on the bus, I sit quietly in seat fourteen listening to the screaming laughter and shrill excitement of the conclusion of another school year. I sit there in silence because I knew that it would be my last bus ride home. I was trying to take everything in: the smell of the old brown bus seats, the half opened windows that tried to keep us cool, the pleasantly plump and incredibly sweet bus driver, and the jovial and rambunctious sounds of kids cackling and yelping. At every stop, I could literally feel my heart drop a little. As the bus neared my neighborhood, my mouth was completely dry. When I saw my house, my heart stopped. There was the moving truck. It was symbol of my leaving home, and the realization that the move was going to happen, and that I had no control over it.…

My stop was in downtown, so I walked out. I was puzzled. Who were these strange people? I sensed the divide between me and the bus passengers socially, culturally, and physically. Ultimately, there was nothing in my past experience in my high school environment that could prepare me for the bus ride, which made me feel awkward and tense. I became conscious of my mannerisms and how I carried myself. For once, I felt like a stranger.…

The alarm clock went “ding….ding… ding.” I woke pretending I couldn’t hear it, because I didn’t want to get up. My mom was yelling at my sister and me, “Get up girls it’s time to go school.” I didn’t understand why she was so excited. I miserably dragged myself out of bed; I just wanted to crawl and hide and the blanket. It was a cold day in March 1999, I was fourteen years old, and it was my first day of school in America.…

As my mother dropped me off at school, like all mothers do with providing me with the typical mother speech about behave in school, come home right after school, and let the dogs out. I get out the car and ran across the school parking lot for my morning Reading and English class in the downpour of rain now. I made it to class on time, but I was soaked from the rain. During this class period, the teacher was providing us an over view for our reading assignment before we were scheduled to go to lunch. That day, another classmate and I was next to the multi-window structured wall that provided the only natural light in the room and the register was blowing out heat. I was sitting there listening to the teacher, but I was distracted by the rain pounding on the windows and noticed how hard the rain was coming down outside. I looked outside and you could not see more than foot in front of you. At that moment, I remember looking down at the ground to see how much water was on the ground and a bird was trying to fly by the window. But, the bird was being pushed to the ground due to the pressure from the rain. Then the teacher said, “We are going to hold off going to lunch for a moment until the rain let’s up.” I look back know and remember the teacher’s facial expression that grew from a very calm person to pure panic in her eyes in a split second, this unexpected change describe for individuals under the nine common stressors by our co-authors. The teacher eyes got wide as softballs and she started shaking, then yells out “Everyone get on the floor now!” I had barely enough time to hit the floor before I heard a large sound like a locomotive coming and then a huge explosion going off. The wall of windows exploded and I felt myself being pushed across the floor by the force of the tornado and the table hit me on top my head,…

It was six-thirty in the morning, when fourteen-year-old Alisha Wilson's alarm went off. She sat up, promptly quieting the screaming electronic. Rubbing her eyes awake, she realized today was Monday. Normally this was a day she usually enjoyed; however, this particular morning was different. It was the first day of school, in a new town with new people. A million negative thoughts ran though her head, and the stress made her uneasy. Bang! “Wake up, wake up, wake up!!!” Alisha's silence was shattered by her five-year-old, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed sister, Marsha. Marsha had barged her way into Alisha’s room and proceeded to jump on her bed. “Today is day one, today is day one!” She exclaimed, jumping up and down, causing her curly hair to bounce.…

Waking up, getting dressed, and hustling my way to school just to sit in a cold metal chair for seven hours is how my days always seemed to start. After having my mind hypnotized by eight different teachers, I preferred nothing less than to drag myself home to rest. My sister, Sydney, normally appeared about two hours later at which we would sit down, crack open the books, and start our homework. This day started the same boring way, but did a complete back-flip in the afternoon turning my routine upside down on itself. Today when I returned home ready to rest I was bombarded by Sydney; not even a warning cry to prepare me for what was coming. I was knocked to the ground and then violently picked up and tossed into the back seat of an SUV.…

I anxiously wait for my teacher Mrs. Lane to pass back our spelling tests from Monday. It was now Tuesday so that meant that whoever did exceptionally well got to pick a sparkly pencil out of the jar that twinkled with glitter. I peeked over my Power Puff Girl glasses to try to sneak a peek just as I noticed Mrs. Burns run into the classroom frantically. She was the other second grade teacher, and she always seemed to be excited over the smallest of things. Except, this time she is frightened and her face has panic written all over it. The intercom suddenly boomed dramatically over us with the principal’s bewildered order that asked us to get underneath our desks and cover our heads. Mrs. Lane spoke with her voice wavering, she said that airplanes were crashing into buildings because there were bad people who wanted to hurt us. Salty tears hit my chapped lips as I worried about my big brother who was down the hall in his fifth grade classroom. I wanted to crawl and hide with him but as I took a hesitant step we were told to form a line by the door. We are now in the school’s basement which…

As I sat there, playing, the door suddenly banged open. My mom stood there anxiously with fear in her chocolaty eyes. I knew something tragic had occurred for she never came home early. She grabbed my forearms and pulled me up with a jolt and snatched a plastic bag from the corner and stuffed what little clothes and toys I had in it. My own brown eyes were filled with tears, but I didn’t let them fall. She dragged me along as she moved and on her way out, she shut the door with a thunderous bang. Who would have thought that that was the last day I would ever see that little one room garage house again.…
