The Multi-Comaplinary Team
Treating populations by ones’ self is difficult, how can one person possibly manage to take care of a person in all professional areas such as, social work, psychology, medical, and counseling? It is impossible. The best thing to do is to form a multi-disciplinary team. An MDT is the multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled professionals who professional backgrounds are all different. The team is formed around the client’s safety, needs, strengths and areas in which they need to improve in. The purpose of this team is for all consumers/clients to receive better plans for their cases. Improving case plans, implementations and choosing specific interventions for these clients is one of the tasks conducted in these meetings. Each of the members bring different perspectives to the table and understanding each person’s role in the meeting can lessen the amount of confusion. In terms of social work the multi-disciplinary team consists of a physician, nurse, social worker, psychologist, client, parent/caregiver (if the client is a child), and any other staff that is working with the client. To go more in depth I will discuss three specific professionals from this team, the social worker, the psychologist and the nurse.
For the social worker it is important to remember the social work core values and ethics. The social workers role is to also assess the client through biopsychosocials and develop and intervention plan. The social worker considers all the factors that may impact the client positively and negatively. Being culturally competent and using the gathered information from the assessments, the social worker also provides support to the client and their family while providing resources for housing, shelter, food and
