The Mockingjay: Summary
The novel started off with Katniss walking through the remains of District 12. As she saw the ruins, she felt guilty and angry for her role in the uprisings against President Snow. Meanwhile, Peeta was captured by the capitol. Katniss had been living in District 13’s underground community with Gale, her mother, and Prim following the rules of President Coin’s systems. Katniss doesn’t trust President Coin yet, especially after District 13 didn’t do anything but watch other districts suffer from the Capitol for years. However, Coin needed Katniss, the Mockingjay, to be the symbol of rebellion and rally the other Districts support. After a set of conditions, Katniss agrees. The next day, Katniss saw a bomb blast that killed numerous Capitol children and the rebel medics, including Prim. Katniss was badly burned. When she woke up in the Capitol hospital, the rebels have won the war and Coin ruled over Panem. Katniss comes upon President Snow when she was wandering the mansion. He told her that Coin set up the attack that killed Prim. Snow’s news was solidified when Coin suggests holding the final Hunger Games with the Capitol children. During the victory ceremony, instead of shooting Snow with the ceremonial arrow, she kills President Coin. Katniss was drugged and held in the mansion for weeks until Haymitch comes to get her. She was now free to go home in District 12. Commander Paylor became the president. Gale got a job in District 2, and her mother started a hospital in District 4. Soon, Peeta returns to District 12 and they grow back together. In the epilogue, Katniss ended up with Peeta because she needed his faith and loyalty more than Gale’s inner fire. 20 years later, they have 2 children, a girl and a boy. Even they they are still haunted by their Hunger Games experiences, they are moving on
