When I got drafted to be in the Vietnam War, I didn’t know what to do. When I got to the campground where I had to be I was shaking like a dog and scared to death. So I got myself settle in for the night and all the soldiers and I were sleeping outside in the hot weather.. So, I fell asleep outside in the hot weather without a blanket, pillow and water and it was very uncomfortable to sleep. Then I woke up in the middle of the night hearing gunshots and cannons going off in the distance. But, I realized it was another group of soldiers coming toward us. So Liam pulled out his rifle gun and started to shoot because the other group of soldiers were trying to attack us. When Liam pulled the trigger on his rifle gun, he had blood all over from…
The Vietnam War was a place of death, destruction, and confusion. Not only was the war a failure, but many soldiers were forced to fight. This lead to many negative effects that I must bring to your attention in this paper. The negative effects on soldiers during and after the war were depression, regret, desensitization, insanity, and the loss of friends.…
The war had left Vietnam in ruins, the state of both the north and the south were miserable and almost uninhabitable. Those who chose to stay in the country where…
Even though the war was so terrible soldiers continue to fight for the lives lost during the war. Some soldiers were prepared to risk their lives so long as there was a chance of success for them. Most went into the war believing they could make a change. Not just for themselves but for their family and country. Some were forced into going to war and forced to fight for their…
In the dense hot jungles of vietnam thousands of Americans took their last breath and disappeared into history. Most of them paid the full price of war but will forever be known as just a tally on a number of losses in a dark gruesome war. Brothers, fathers, uncles died everyday to protect the citizens of South Vietnam from the brutal North Vietnamese. Like all wars there's no easy way out; blood will always be shed and family chains will forever be broken. Vietnam was a terrible but necessary war. When the Vietnam soldiers returned, they were treated badly by their fellow citizens, by people who protested the war calling them child killers and monsters. It was not the soldier’s fault that their government drafted them into war. The real monsters…
War is a terrible thing. It has confounding effects on everyone involved. Some people take it well, while others have such horrible experiences that it scares them for life and affects them even after the war when they return home. Ernest Hemingway's Soldier's Home and Tim O'Brien's How to Tell a True War Story are two great examples of literature that express' what any particular soldier can go through upon returning home. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome is a very common sickness that soldiers come down with after returning from war. There are a few differences and similarities between the two stories; the way each soldier handles himself after the war and the way people look at each of the soldiers when they return home.…
The war was not even taken seriously by many people, and veterans (specifically Hunt) were appalled by the flippant and insensitive (though innocent and thoughtless) comments made by others, family included. To the vets, it had been a hellish experience, and many experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, and many became dependent on drugs and alcohol to get through the psychological after-effects of being involved in such stressful and torturous circumstances. However, appallingly, many were unable to get the help they needed. Medical aid was not made available to them right away, and a shocking percentage of Americans viewed them as crazy and dangerous to society. Some even thought that the veterans deserved their psychological conditions. Suicide became increasingly common as many veterans experienced completely unfounded hatred and…
The Vietnam War was considered one of the bloodiest battles ever in the history of the United States. Not only were soldiers harmed physically during the war, but they were also wounded mentally. There are endless accounts of soldiers leaving the war and coming home not just with bullet wounds, but the memories that followed with it. These memories caused soldiers to not sleep at night and in some cases ruining their lives and forcing them to suicide. After the war, specialists came up with a name for this “disease” that was destroying the lives of many Vietnam veterans. They classified it as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. (National) The psychological burdens of war, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, have substantial effects on soldiers in the armed forces making reentry into civilian life challenging.…
The Vietnam War had a lasting impact on Vietnam Veterans, who although they fought their hardest for their country, they returned to a country who saw them as less than heroes. They suffered both psychological and medical problems from open battles, sniper attacks and chemical warfare, and stress from war-life. Although the Vietnam War had some negative impacts, the Vietnam War was the turning point in Australian society, changing to a multicultural community we are proud of today.…
War affects people in many ways. The war affects people not only physical but also mentally. Stress has a very big effect on people whose in the war. Not just any kind of stress but post traumatic stress disorder is a very common type. PTSD became diagnosis with influence from social movement including veteran, feminist and holocaust survivors .Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing a terrifying event. People who has PTSD experienced many life changing things not just because the things that happened to them but the things they watch happen to others. People who have PTSD have many symptoms including flashbacks, social isolation,…
The emotional burdens of a soldier are very high. During the war they develop pride and reputation not to be afraid and if they do not to show it. If they are to show it then it can be a weakness for the enemy to exploit or even for a cruel friendly to be rude upon. Also being away from their family makes them long for them and miss their loved ones. After the war it doesn’t get much better either, the men that survive it begin to carry guilt, grief, and confusion. They are always trying to come to terms with all that happened in the war through storytelling but this does not always work.…
The United States soldiers in Vietnam experienced a war unlike any other in America’s history. One of the main reasons that this war was so different was that the conditions of the soldiers were so terrible. One soldier described what it was actually like living in Vietnam. “We lived out in the jungle and patrolled three villages. We moved from one village to another all the time. You didn't want to stay in one spot for too long. The enemy would try to find out where we were and try to ambush us. So, usually at about 2 a.m. we started to move around from one village to another” (Alex Ditinno). This man shows how terrible their living conditions are. After having a constant fear of being ambushed, having to sleep in dirty and uncomfortable environments for days, and having to wake up in the middle of the night to leave villages, the soldier’s minds are going to be effected. The average age of a soldier in the war was nineteen years old. Before their brains are even fully developed they experience such atrocities that they grow an enormous hatred inside. The only people that they can bring out that hatred on were the Vietnamese. The enemies were known to the Americans as the…
Some of the veterans have lost limbs when stepping onto booby traps while on duty doing their jobs. So many of our veterans have post traumatic stress disorder that has been caused by horrible military fights, leaving many with mental health issues. Many have even committed suicide because of these issues. For a while now many actors and musicians have been starting foundations to raise money to help our veterans get better.…
The soldiers that fought during World War I faced many difficulties during the war. These difficulties included day to day combat, little or no food for days at a time, health issues that arose from the poor conditions, and having to deal with the mental strain of the war. Your average person either knows or has heard of these difficulties, but the average person probably doesn’t know about the problems these soldiers face upon their return home. The main problem for returning soldiers is what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.…
The root of the problem is fundamentally the system which has no foundation for exiting the military, where on the other hand all types of efforts and bonuses are given upon being recruited when entering the military. When one is classified as a Veteran, they have usually lived a life that was based on; orders, structure, hard work, cleanliness, timeliness, resiliency, and being very attentive and keeping their “wits” about them at all times. After being removed from this structured life where one is completely dependent on the government for everything and usually works in a unit or group situation, to a life where one is completely independent and has to relearn how to function without the aid of any government institutions can be a very difficult experience for many. This can physically and more so mentally cause great anguish for many. Many veterans have no idea of where to turn or where they can go. The process for finding out what is available to them is no easy task. Also depending whether the Veteran had been oversees, injured, or had seen any form of combat can play a big part of…
