The Meeting That Changed My Life
The Things my Deceased Sister told me

First, I must tell you that I had a sister named Cindy. When we were young, people thought we were twins. She was 13 months older then me. About 23 years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer. They gave her 8 months to 5 years to live. She said she was going to prove them wrong and live longer. Well, she did exceed the 5 years by about 6 months. She passed away in October of 1995, at the age of 34. I still miss her and when I heard about a medium from Stroudsburg, who knew things that no one else would know, I called and made arrangements for her to come to my house. Mary Sbat said she didn't want to know anything about me, except my first name, or who I wanted to contact. I never told her that it was my sister that I wanted her to talk to. I was told some very interesting things and I was surprised by some of them. Mary said that she would be at my house on a Saturday about 2:00pm. She arrived about 1:15pm. She wanted to give herself some extra time since she was never in this area before. For the meeting, she asked that I have a picture of the person and something metal that belonged to that person. The picture I picked was the last picture that we had taken of Cindy. I found her knitting needles and put them on the kitchen table. Once again, Mary told me not to tell her anything. We sat at the table, Mary picked up the white needles, and looked at the picture. After a short time, Mary began to tell me the things that Cindy wanted me to know. Mary said that Cindy wanted to let me know that her legs felt fine. Cindy had a walking disorder since she was 17 years old. Her walking was very unsteady, Cindy wanted me to know

that she has no trouble walking anymore. She also let Mary know that she had no more pain from the cancer. When she passed away, she had lesions on her brain and had a lot of pain. Cindy also wanted to let me know she is still 34. She laughs because she knows that I say that I'm 29, plus

My first experience at an alcoholics anonymous meeting was very interesting and in a way uplifting. At All Saints Lutheran Church the home group called “The Young People’s Group” there were people who had come from all walks of life. The group meeting that I thought would have been rather small slowly became larger and larger over the course of the night. I was unaware that the AA meetings had been setup with a set of codes or rules for those who struggle every day to fight this addiction. They allowed people who were new or if it was their first meeting to introduce themselves and tell their story to the fight of addiction related to alcohol. I was really impressed with the fact that the AA groups have an awards system for reaching sobriety for a certain period of time whether it was 1 month or 15 years. After the awards were given out for those who had reached a certain amount of sobriety the chapter meeting moved on to the struggles that those people in attendance were having throughout the week or weeks. A gentlemen by the name of Dave opened up the meeting with a story of him in another AA meeting. He was very upset with the reaction of a man who had been driving home on the way from work. While this particular man was driving home he described the flashing of a draft beer sign. All the gentleman could think of was the fact that his lips have been not wetted from a drop of alcohol since the previous day and he was struggling with that. Dave insisted to tell us that this angered him because although he isn’t supposed to be worried with other people’s struggles; all he could come back to was how he wishes he was that guy driving by the beer sign. Dave wished at that very moment that he could drive past that sign and allow him self to decide to either go into the bar and drink or keep driving. All he could see however, when he passed the sign was it flashing in his mind over and over again. Dave described this story because that very same night he…

Mrs. Johnson is a long time friend so I notice the excitement in here eyes to talk to me about her new addition. She said that nobody has ever wanted to write about her feeling of her pregnancy and with two other children excited to have an adult to talk too. We sat down on her couch and she turned toward me eager to know what I was going to ask.…

I met with her to discuss coordinating Home Phyiscal Therapy—a service she was well familiar with. I was impressed at how vibrant and happy she looked despite her advanced condition. As we conversed she began to share with me her story. She told me about how she was diagnosed with breast cancer twice followed by an acute brain tumor several years ago. After undergoing emergency brain surgery, which her young adult children had to consent to, she awoke unable to talk or walk. Despite this she was greatful to God for her life and for the choice her children had made. She worked hard to regain as much functionality as possible but was left with some mild cognitive impairments. Unfortunately, a few years ago, she was diagnosed with MS which she continues to battle today. I was truly amazed at her resilienciy and love of life! I did not expect to sit and talk to her for over an hour and half that afternoon but little did I know she was the one that was going to minister to…
