The Man of Justice It is said to be a sin to kill a mockingbird because “‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy’” (Lee 94). In this novel many sins were committed. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the behavior of Atticus Finch shows that he is a hero, because he demonstrated understanding, thoughtfulness, and passion towards his children, neighbour-hood, and city. Atticus is a man who raised his children in an admirable way. He never yelled at the two, or abused them by physical punishment. Atticus also never bragged about how he could do many things, like shoot a gun, which may have taught the children a lot.

Atticus woke up one day to see his neighbour’s house on fire. He tells Jem and Scout to wait by the Radley’s house, because Miss Maudie’s home is in a dangerous state. While the children watched the house burn from the Radleys’, they spotted their brave dad run into the house to grab something. “I saw Atticus carrying Miss Maudie’s heavy oak rocking chair, and thought it was sensible of him to save what she most valued” (Lee 93). Atticus had the courage to run into a burning house to save a neighbour’s favourite rocking chair in the freezing cold! The Old Sarum Bunch came to the prison where Tom Robinson was held; (with rifles and weapons), and Atticus wouldn’t accept their orders. The children were watching their father sitting in front of the jail with a light and a book, when many cars then came by. Atticus began speaking to the group and they asked “’you know what we want’ another man said. ‘Get aside the door Mr. Finch’” (Lee 202). Atticus courageously replied by stating “’You can turn around and go home, Walter’” (Lee 202). This is only one of the things Atticus has done for Tom Robinson’s safety and comfort.

Atticus was put in a situation where he had to shoot a dog to save his neighbours. This started when Jem and Scout were trying to find some wildlife to shoot at when, they spot Tim Johnson (a dog). He was acting weird, so the children ran to their nanny, Calpurnia, and told her about the situation. She later called Atticus and told him to come because of this animal. Sheriff Heck Tate and Atticus came out of the car with a rifle. Atticus is handed the gun and shoots Jim Johnson. Atticus later states to the child “’Don’t you go near that dog, you understand? Don’t go near him, he’s just as dangerous dead as alive’” (Lee 128).

Atticus is a brave hero that has done many things to improve others’ joy, like when he let Mr. Ewells spit in his face so Bob’s children wouldn’t get abused. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the behavior of Atticus Finch shows that he is a hero, because he demonstrated understanding, thoughtfulness, and passion towards his children, neighbourhood, and city. Atticus is considered a hero because he committed selfless acts to help others in need. He treated everyone with respect regardless of their race or background.

A major theme in To Kill a Mockingbird is the moral nature of humans. At the beginning of the novel, Scout and Jem live in their childhood world, intuitively assuming that everyone is good because not once in their lives have they seen what evil truly is. As Jem and Scout transition from their naïveté and innocence, Atticus is there every step of the way, in order to guide them towards the right path. He is neither the strictest parent nor the most affectionate, but the reader comes to see Atticus as the noblest man and father one could ever encounter. Maycomb relies on Atticus throughout the story; the first clear incident is the mad dog appearance. Heck Tate says, ““Take him, Mr. Finch”… [and] handed the rifle to Atticus” (95). This quote symbolizes the towns’ people handing their problem to Atticus to solve. However, Mr. Finch is not able to follow in the town’s footsteps as they conform to racial segregation. He ignores their crude remarks such as, “Scout Finchs daddy defends niggers” (76) and agrees to stick up for Tom Robinson, a black man, in court. His decision soon puts him in the position to receive scorn from Maycomb citizens. Even though Tom does not win the case Atticus succeeds in “send[ing] forth a ripple of hope” and “making a step---it’s just a baby-step, but it’s a step” (216).…

I have been waiting for this day to come. The day Tom Robinson is moved to Maycomb County Jail. I am truly terrified for Atticus nonetheless. Atticus is not a hostile person and I understand he is planning to guard the jail. I pray to the Lord nothing ensues. Oh no! This can’t be happening! The children are on their way to town. I can only assume they are following Atticus. Nothing good can come of this. I have been up all night and at last I see Atticus and the children walking home, unharmed. What a relief!…

However, Atticus decided to defend Tom despite knowing that this could put his family’s safety and reputation at risk. With this in mind, he still had enough courage to defend Tom to the best of his abilities. “I’ll send him home,” a burly man said, and grabbed Jem roughly by the collar. He yanked Jem nearly off his feet.” (Lee, 203) An angry mob approached Atticus as he guarded Tom’s cell and attempted to hurt Jem, Atticus’ son. Scout and Jem secretly followed Atticus to the prison and overheard a conversation Atticus was having with one of the members of the mob. Afterwards, Scout ran to her father and Jem quickly followed her. A member of the mob tried to hurt Jem and put Atticus’ family in danger because of his case. This was one of the many consequences of defending Tom that Atticus was willing to undertake in order to stay true to his…

Atticus says, “It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird,” to Jem in Chapter Ten of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee after Uncle Jack instructs both Jem and Scout on the principles of using their air rifles. Miss Maudie also tells Scout, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing…” From both statements, the reader may infer that Atticus desires his children to treat any innocent living being, possibly humans in specific, with respect, and wrongdoings occur when behaving oppositely. As the novel and Atticus’ case with Tom Robinson progresses, the idea above may develop into the main theme as the people of Maycomb County treat Atticus, Scout, Jem, and others wrongly simply due to the racism and discrimination that occurred in a segregated atmosphere. Also, several…

Atticus Finch is a man of principles who is consistent in his views and deeds throughout the novel. Aunt Alexandra tells Jem and Scout they have to act like Finches. Initially, Atticus agrees with her, but says differently while he puts his children to bed, that “I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.” (178). Atticus doesn’t want himself or his kids to act like the rest of their family. He likes everyone to think for themselves and be their own person. Again, Atticus is genuine when Heck is telling Atticus that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell, but in his shock, Atticus doesn’t believe him and thinks Tate is trying to cover up what Jem did. Atticus tells Mr. Tate that, “I don’t live that way.” (365). Atticus is an honest person, and he always tries to be honest and outright. He doesn’t act different around certain people or in certain social settings. As the Finches’ neighbor Miss Maudie Atkinson says, “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets.” (61).…

Everyone in the town respects him because he’s is a wise and fair man. He teaches his children to treat everyone with respect, what true bravery is, and to be humble. When talking about Mrs. Dubose's death, Atticus says, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyways”(Lee 149). Although Mrs. Dubose was an awful old lady, Atticus always respected and admired her for her fighting until the end. Atticus was also a very firm believer in equality. Miss Maudie says after Atticus shoots the rabid dog, “I think maybe he out his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things” (Lee 130). Atticus is very humble to the point where he lowers himself to be equal to everyone else. Jem and Scout mirror their father by learning qualities that are shown by…

A lesson taught by Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird is that you should never kill a mockingbird because they only create music and harm nothing. What Atticus meant by this is that you should never hurt an innocent person no matter the situation. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird the mockingbird symbolizes all that is innocent and all that is harmless in society. Harper Lee uses two characters to show the innocence in people and to show how this innocence is often killed: Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. The theme in To Kill a Mockingbird, that often the innocent are harmed by the wicked unjustly and intentionally, only to be saved by the brave and intelligent, who try hard to show society who these people really are is clearly articulated throughout the novel by the use of the symbolism of the mockingbird infused in the…

Justice is defined as something or some action that is “according to what is morally right and fair”. Within To Kill a Mockingbird there are many different instances of justice being, or not being, served. There are also plenty of cases of the word “justice” being used in various manners. Many would say that justice was not served in Maycomb. Tom Robinson was persecuted based on nothing but allegations and his skin color. Despite this, he was found guilty and ultimately was killed. Many, however, would say that justice was served in the case of the death of Bob Ewell. Personally, I believe that justice was not served in any way.…
