The Mammy
Images people once thought of as funny and humorous are now thought to be very hurtful and racial. Over eighty years ago, The Mammy was thought to be one of the most enduring images of the African-American woman. The Mammy grew out of slavery and the location of black women in the entanglement of social relations in a biracial slave society. The boundaries have been defined of the acceptable and unacceptable black female behavior. However, since time has elapsed the image of the Mammy has turned into a very negative one. It has become a difference of whites and blacks, for blacks it is apart of who they are and where they have come from and for the whites it is an image that is used in entertainment productions. The Mammy has a very unique physical appearance, has justified the racist economic system and has become an important staple of literature and television. Is she a simple depiction of an African American housekeeper or is she a racist stereotype perpetuated throughout popular culture from the times of slavery? First, the Mammy image is one that will never be forgotten. Her physical presence suggests bodily strength and power, evidenced by her ability to work hard yet show no signs of fatigue. She is usually very fat, very dark, and wears a bandanna and a beaming smile as a sign of how much she enjoys her oppressed position. The Mammies appearance dignifies who she is and what she represents. Developed after the World War I, the Mammy became the historical figure of the African American woman (Rhodes). She became a symbol of "oppressive social relations based on race, gender, and class,"(Thomas). One of the most important aspects of the Mammy figure is her submissiveness and docility. The Mammy was a slave who posed no threat to the White family or to the power structure of slavery. She is conventionally valued for her reassuring gentleness, as an armed warrior. Along with a mop in her right hand, she holds a weapon in her left hand. She

    Her care and concern for her family is apparent throughout the whole book because of this constant pushing. An example is when Ma hurries them out of the comfortable Weedpatch government camp. Though the living conditions there were filled with toilets, showers, and hospitable people, Ma knew the Joad family could not stay there anymore while there was no work to be found. When Pa tells Ma that the reason the men don't like looking for work is because they know they won't find any, Ma replies fiercely, “You ain't got the right to get discouraged. This here fambly's goin' under. You jus' ain't got the right.” When she says “This here fambly's goin' under,” it can be understood that her main concern is the family. The men finally begin discussing where to drive to and Ma interrupts saying, “Well, we got to git goin', and goin' quick. I ain't a-settin' here no longer, no matter how nice.” This quote is important because it shows that Ma puts the family before her own happiness because she was comfortable living in the government camp, but knew the family would not survive. She pushes them to leave the camp immediately that night, in hopes of finding work to sustain them. Another scene in the book where Ma pushes her family towards better conditions is when they are at the peach camp. Ma knows that they cannot stay there because the low wages are barely enough…

    Novelist Edwidge Danticat contends Nanny “has craved small comforts, like sitting idly on a porch, and wants her granddaughter to have them, along with money and status, no matter what the emotional cost” (xvi). From early in her childhood, Janie strives to obey and submit to the will of her elders, regardless of her inner desire to find “her authentic self and real love” (Danticat ix). However, Nanny’s concern is that Janie will relegate herself to a life of promiscuity like her mother or, worse yet, to a life of poverty and bare subsistence unless Janie finds financial freedom through the sanctity of marriage.     Harriet’s grandmother was a well-respected older slave woman who gained her freedom in the last will and testament of her mistress. Jacobs is determined not to be raped or surrender all her rights to anyone. Jacobs didn’t know she was a slave until she was almost a teenager.     As children, the girl’s mothers come to the shelter for a Sunday visit, revealing more opaque racial stereotypes, leading us to uncover more clues of culture, and linking us to the their race. Twyla describes to us “She had on those green slacks I hated and hated...and that fur jacket with the pocket linings so ripped she had to pull to get her hands out of them” (p 658). It is also told to us that Twyla’s mom “did not bring any food for the lunch so they had to eat the candy that Twyla had in her basket” (p 658). Roberta’s mom comes hand in hand with a cross and bible. She also “brought chicken legs and ham sandwiches and oranges and a whole box of chocolate-covered grahams” (p 659). From these facts it would be easy to see the stereotype of each race, Twyla depicted to be the poor, black girl, while Roberta was the pleasant white girl with a devout Christian mother. This is furthermore seen by the displeasure Roberta’s mom has towards Twyla’s mother when she tried to shake her hand. This interaction shows Roberta’s mother as having almost a white supremacist attitude toward Twyla’s mother, treating her quite inferior. Twyla’s mother responds by outbursts and name calling.     Reid does not just stop at the objectifying of black women in rap music; she goes on to argue that black women experience the same kind of treatment by men in their day to day lives. Men often feel their actions of degrading women are justified because they feel the objects of their treatment are the “bad” black women, as opposed to the “good” ones. This idea of good vs. bad limits the black women to two unfair social castes in their own misogynistic societies. The good black women follow the typical “mammy” archetype popularized by Harriet Beecher Stowe in her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
