In ‘‘The Magic Show,'' by Tim O'Brien he breaks down a comparison of writing to magic. Early on in O'Brien's life he discovered that he liked performing magic he felt as if he was making miracles happen. When performing magic the outcome is based on an illusion creating a misleading appearance, forming something into a newly impression of reality. In magic the audience should always be wondering how the trick will end and how the magician performed the trick just as with writing an essay you lead readers on so that they wonder what will happen next, trying to figure out how it will end, and still at the end leaving the reader to ponder the reading. One event leads to another to create a plot.…

Where did it come from? A old, wooden chest was placed on a stool. The wood was peeling off, revealing an ugly tint of pink. Shiny, gold borders decorated the sides and the top of the chest which had a keyhole in the center. Ms. Amber, our teacher, suggested that for home work, we should write where it came from, who previously owned it, and what it was used for. As I was thinking about my story, the chest opened. I turned around to see if any of my classmates noticed, but no one did. My attention snapped back to the mysterious chest. An orb floated out of the chest and a video, I assumed, of its ancient history started...…

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare is telling the readers that, love needs no reason to exist; it defies logic and ignores all circumstances. This compelling message is very thoroughly communicated with the connection of the fantasy world and reality. The connection occurs in a forest, where each character of significance is, at one point, present. Here, the characters experience unforeseen events, as a result of the debatable use of magic, from those in power. However, despite the extreme unusualness and complications, the characters challenge the circumstances, and persist in loving the one they feel closest to. In this play, this situation is best represented by three significant relationships. The first exists between a lover and her hater, the next involves a young and rebellious couple, and the last concerns an ill-fated mechanical and the queen of the fairies.…

Additionally, over the course of the novel, Niel slowly watches Marian grow old and change, but he consistently suppresses the realization. “He had the feeling, which he never used to have, that her lightness cost her something” (Cather 83). This “lightness” foreshadows the pivotal point, the grimy, true behaviors of Marian. Yet, Niel cannot help but keep his escapism intact: “Was he afraid of his womenfolk? Or was it another kind of cowardice, the fear of losing a pleasant memory, of finding her changed and marred, a dread of something that would throw a disenchanting light upon the past?” (130). Niel never moves on from this image he has put onto Marian. Once Marian, herself, moves on, Niel does, too. Nevertheless, as we see in the end of…

“Jeremiah's message was a mixture of judgment on the sinful nation of Judah; and hope, after judgment and exile, of a new covenant relationship. Comparing the parallels between Judah and the spiritually low tide of our nation today, what message and teaching could be drawn from Jeremiah's portrayal of God as the Divine Potter? In a world fractured by religious, social, political, and culture tensions, how might we Christ Followers relate Paul's concept of "When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son..." (Galatians 4:4 ESV) to an upside down 21st century world?”…

A Wizard of Earthsea is a disappointing book with outdated language, and poor attention to detail. From the first page to the last, archaic language made A Wizard of Earthsea difficult to understand for a modern reader, and frustratingly decrepit. On the very first page readers struggle through sentences worded as: “many a Gontish man has gone forth to…” and onto the very last page “taking a course somewhat northward of their outbound…” which creates an irritatingly condescending tone that is unnecessary, even for a “classic”. Not only the language but the setting is incredibly hard to follow, with several overly detailed maps included that depict a land quite different from that which is described in the book. For example, Gont is a land…

“The Magician’s Nephew” by Clive Staples Lewis, or C. S. Lewis as he is more well-known, is a beautiful tale describing the birth of a land that many have come to know and love, the land of Narnia. The first book in the series, but sixth to be published, didn’t include beloved characters such as Lucy and Edmund but instead hinted towards the future endeavors that would be experienced in Narnia and the surrounding countries. Reading this book as a child, the individual is instantly enthralled by the mystery that lies in the neighborhood of Digory and Polly, two unlikely friends. Their adventurous nature makes for an enjoyable read, even when the adventure is merely Polly’s smugglers’ cave and beyond. But behind the excitement and wanderlust hides a parallel world. To…
