The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock (Response) When thinking of a typical love story a reader expects compassion and romance, but in T. S. Eliot “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, romance is not the topic of discussion. The backdrop of the poem is a typical London, England day with numerous travels through the seamless foggy streets early 1900’s London. The mystery or puzzle through the poem tend to transpire with cleverly diverted unanswered question from the narrator that somehow get overlooked and never finish. Taking a step back and reverting to the title of the poem being a love song is bizarre; however, love songs tend to be awkward message. The tone of the character in the poem is in a limbo of making like decision and shares with the reader on a quick life journey of indecisive planes of life with or without love. Any man or woman typically goes through a phase in their life of not wanting the lurking eyes of others, and viewed as odd or different. Comparatively, the narrator voices the opinion and sensitive subject of hair loss and weight loss. Alfred shows compassion for how he physical change over time, “With a bald spot in the middle of my hair / they will say: “How his hair is growing thin!” (40-41). Although this may be true Alfred does not want to be stair upon with a judging eye, because he is aware of becoming bald and losing weight over time. The facts are all true about him, but overwhelming to hear the same thing repeatedly. The poem itself is mysterious enough on not knowing where Alfred will end up, with so many puzzle unsolved or answer.
