The Lord Of The Flies: Movie Analysis
In the movie, The Lord of the Flies, man is expressed as neither good nor bad. Jack’s tribe represents how man can be seen as evil; they were ruthless and didn’t care about anything. Jack told his tribe to do horrible things like kill Simon because they thought he was the beast in the dark, and one boy even killed Piggy too and they all tried to kill Ralph at the end. They were all bad things and bad people who did them. But, Ralph and his tribe were good. They made sure everyone was fed and safe and cared about being rescued unlike Jack. Man can either be good or bad, they’re not all naturally good or bad. This movie demonstrates John Locke’s idea of a “state of nature” (or no government) because they technically didn’t have a government. It was chaotic and there was fighting and people dying. It also demonstrates his idea of “natural rights” (life, liberty, and property) because life would of been easier on the island if they followed them. There was weird songs and chants and weird acts, like the wild bonfire. This movie is significant to government class because it shows how there could be different types of government used in other places and how they form/handle it. There can be different types of government found in other things like friendships or in this case, a group of boys on a deserted island rather than just an actual government. It also demonstrates how they’re formed (dictatorship vs. democracy) and how each leader(s) treated it. Jack formed his tribe by stating he was the leader and he treated them like puppets. Whereas, Ralph did a raise of hands to vote for him and he treated them with respect and care. However, there could be other types of government demonstrated in this movie and there could be other ways to handle
