The Life of Christina Carter Christina Carter displayed courage when she was discriminated against by people she thought was supposed to love and accept the life that she was destined to live. Even though she dealt with life threatening experiences that was a part of her life, she continued to fight her battles with confidence and determination living life to the fullest. Christina Carter, born Christopher Carter on August 14, 1968, was a person who struggled to live a “normal life” as a transgendered woman. Transgender is when a person born of one sex believes that they are meant to be born as the opposite sex. Growing up living life as a male was very difficult for Christopher because deep down inside he felt that he was meant to be a female. Since he wasn’t what society deems as a “normal boy,” others mistreated him and he wasn’t accepted by his own family or friends. Once in high school, Christopher tried out for the cheerleading squad, making him the first male to try-out at that school. His family never accepted him being a “feminine boy,” but now wearing girl clothes just added extra embarrassment for the Carter family. Christopher was immediately given an ultimatum to act like a “normal boy” or to get out of their house and never look back. Tired of living a lie to please everyone else except for himself, Christopher left his parents’ house and moved in with some older friends who shared the same struggle as he. With all of the setbacks that he endured, he was determined to continue high school and graduate on time. Surprisingly, Christopher earned an academic scholarship to Norfolk State University. The beginning of freshman year started off very smooth for

In the article titled “Why Some Critics Don’t Think Caitlyn Jenner Deserved the Arthur Ashe Courage Award”, writer Justin Wm. Moyer from the Washington Post discusses the criticisms that have come with ESPN’s decision to give Caitlyn Jenner the prestigious award which symbolizes courage. Moyer writes about the doubters who don’t believe that what Caitlyn Jenner did by publicly coming out as transgender constitutes as “courageous”. He also references those who believe that Lauren Hill, a 19-year-old college basketball player who recently passed away with cancer, would have been a better candidate to receive the award. Although he points out the many doubters and their negative reactions, it seems as though he falls on the other side of the…

In the movie Into the Wild, Christopher was a very successful graduate from Emory University in Atlanta. After graduating there he talked with his parents about seeking a master’s degree from Harvard University, which is a testament to how smart he was and his aspirations to make something of himself in the future. However, during that same conversation, he tells his parents, who had just offered to buy him a brand new car, that his old one was just fine, and that he didn’t need a new car. This shows his distaste with looking like the average person in society and his affinity for being different. He tells them he wants to take 2 months off before starting his master’s degree to clean up some stuff but he probably meant that he was going to go away and take on a new name, “Alexander Supertramp” (Brown).…

Encouraged by renowned medical psychologist Dr. John Money, an expert in the field of gender identity and sexual reassignment, the anonymous child was surgically altered to live life as a girl. The case would prove to be precedent-setting, becoming "proof" for the feminist movement that gender gap was purely a result of cultural conditioning. But all was not as it seemed. Initially proclaimed a resounding success, the devastating psychological cost of the procedure has only recently become known. Now living as an adult male, married and with a family of his own, this patient has granted John Colapinto unprecedented access to his story. As Nature Made Him is at once a fascinating exploration of the elusive nature of sexual identity and an examination of the ever-intensifying struggle between what medical science can do and what doctors should do. It is also a story of courage and survival that sheds light on the murkiest areas human sexuality. (Amazon.com)…

Sometimes the biggest acts of courage happen in the smallest incidents. Growing up in the upper-class, being a model, and then eloping during the Great Depression is not all it is said to be. Dealing with abuse and divorce, poetry was the best kind of therapy for Anne Sexton. She did attend therapy sessions, and they were recorded so that they could be played back as inspiration for her poems. Sexton was hospitalized, and attempted suicide in her life, so her idea of courage might be different than what others may see it. A baby’s first step, men fighting in war, dealing with abuse, and reaching old age are significant signs of courage. As she expresses her view on the subject, it is made clear that people do not need to be a “superhero” to be courageous.…
