The Level of Consumer Confidence of the Residents in Batangas and Lipa City
Chapter I
THE PROBLEM

This research studies focuses on the level of consumer confidence of the residents in Batangas and Lipa City. This chapter includes introduction, background of the study, statement of the problem, conceptual framework, research hypothesis, scope and delimitation, significance of the study and definition of terms.
Introduction
Consumer confidence is defined as that which consumers feel about the overall state of the economy and their personal financial situation. How confident people feel about stability of their incomes determines their spending activity and therefore serves as one of the key indicators for the overall shape of the economy. In essence, if consumer confidence is higher, consumers are making more purchases, boosting the economic expansion. On the other hand, if confidence is lower, consumers tend to save more than they spend, prompting the contraction of the economy. A month-to-month diminishing trend in consumer’s confidence suggests that in the current state of the economy most consumers have a negative outlook on their ability to find and retain good jobs (CCB, 2000).
In simple terms, increased consumer’s confidence indicates economic growth in which consumers are spending money, indicating higher consumption. Decreasing consumer confidence implies slowing economic growth, and so consumers are likely to decrease their spending. The idea is that the more confident people feel about the economy and their jobs and incomes, the more likely they are to make purchases. Declining consumer confidence is a sign of slowing economic growth and may indicate that the economy is headed into trouble (Conference Board, 2000).
Generally this paper aims to determine the level of consumer confidence of the residents in Batangas and Lipa City. Specially, it aims to identify which forces greatly affect the consumer spending in terms of food, education and transportation and to prove that consumer confidence must not be disregarded in

    Consumer income is another factor that affects aggregate demand and supply. The amount of income that consumers are left with after taxes and living expenses is the amount of money that circulates and helps the economy. When consumer income is low the demand of supply and goods is also low and when the demand is low the need to supply is also low. From a classical perspective, most of these economic factors are the doing of the people rather than the government or business itself. Unemployment is caused more by will than skill which leads to the government spending too much money on those unemployed. If the American people have the expectation that if they are out of work the government should take care of them, more and more will quit their job or hang on long enough to be terminated. The income of the consumer also has more to do with the relationships and policies set between companies and their employers. Consumer income and consumer spending are large contributing factors to the economy. Overall incomes have improved slightly, but wages and salaries have fallen due to federal spending cuts that caused recent furloughs across the government. American’s are cautious about spending because of the governments’ slow economic recovery over the last few years. Income growth is not at its best so consumers will not support heavy spending. Americans have reduced savings to compensate higher payroll taxes. This is now potentially catching up the consumer who now has a decreased ability to purchase nonessential items. The government faces a questionable economy regarding consumer spending, even for years after the recession, they are still timid about making major purchases. The weak growth of overall spending is partially due to fewer demands for durable goods; such as automobiles and furniture. People complain more about spending on high priced non-durable goods; such as food, clothing, and fuel, because it is a necessity.…

In this paper we identify the existing effect of the economic factors on aggregate demand and supply. The American people have little to no income when unemployed, this in turn causes a decrease in demand for the economy. This type of event causes the aggregate demand to curve to the left. One of the main reasons unemployment remains high to this day is the lack of demand. A shortfall in aggregate demand is precisely the type of issue that can be addressed by monetary policy, however, to do so we need continuous monetary stimulus to progress toward maximum employment stability. The crash of the housing market has set tremendous limitation on consumer and their spending. Sternness on behalf of the government to a certain extent has decreased aggregate demand during this recovery period. These actions have directly impacted growth. What this means to us is that lower government spending and higher taxes call for disposable income for consumers, work for government contractors diminishing, and a decrease in government payroll. Another factor that has had great effect and impact are the levels of uncertainty. The events leading to this state have yet to be resolved which in turn have caused a lack of willingness and confidence within consumers. In the beginning the levels of uncertainty reflected the force of influence the recession had on us as consumers. This is something that had not been experienced in several years which made it difficult for us to handle or even find a way to get by in a more successful demeanor.
