The Lengths of Leadership
This Freshman Seminar displayed the power of leadership in all of its forms. There are many types of leadership skills and characteristics; however, they all are encompassed by a set of core values one must follow to be a leader. We explored what could be called the ten commandments of leadership during class discussion and how they applied to a series of movies including Apollo 13, Courage Under Fire, Norma Rae, and Cry Freedom. In each movie, every character showed a different type of leadership, rather it be negative or positive. In this seminar we also distinguished between transactional and transformational leadership. In this research paper I will examine each film by identifying the concepts of leadership found within them, if they demonstrate transactional or transformational leadership, and how they relate to my personal experiences.
Apollo 13 displayed how even under life threatening circumstances, it is essential to stay focused and work together. Ground control acted with strong leadership as well as the astronauts whose lives were at risk. Ground controls actions had the potential to destroy the mission, leaving the astronauts dead; however, they worked tirelessly to save their lives. They had to understand the consequences of each move they made, and how they could calculate them to get the astronauts home safely. They gained insight by researching and simulating all of the components they were working with. Ken Mattingly, an astronaut who was originally supposed to be in the space shuttle but was removed from the mission, put his feelings of resentment aside and worked non stop in finding a solution that would bring his friends home. Once the shuttle started to shut down, more and more issues arrived and it was ground controls responsibility to work through them.
Successful communication between ground control and the astronauts is what brought those men home. I believe that being able to convey a message is one of the

    While in the Oval Office of the White house, on January 28, 1986, President Ronald Reagan delivered his speech about The Challenger Disaster. The speech was made just hours after space shuttle “Challenger” exploded during take-off, killing all seven crew members on board. Thousands witnessed this horrifying event live in person and on television. A big factor about this launch, making the explosion an even worse disaster was the fact that this mission was very unique. For the first time, NASA allowed a civilian to be allowed in space during a mission. She was aboard The Challenger as an observer in the NASA Teacher in Space Program. Ironically, nineteen years before this disaster, three astronauts were tragically lost in an accident on the ground. President Reagan remembers those astronauts that were lost not only the day of the disaster, but also those who were lost nineteen years before. He conducts this speech not only to mourn the death of The Challenger astronauts, but for the families and those who were impacted from this event. He especially calls out to the schoolchildren of America who were watching this event live as the shuttle took off. As the President of the United States, Reagan earned the nickname "The Great Communicator" due to his ability to convey his beliefs concerning economic and domestic policies to the public.     At some point in our youth, every child has entertained the idea of walking the surface of a planet only graced by the footsteps of a handful of select individuals. Jack Swigert, Fred Haise, and Jim Lovell train for this moment in the NASA program, but alas Apollo 13 is the first aborted Apollo mission. There are scarcely words that can describe the disappointment of these three men, but at the time, that was only a minor adversity during their space mission. The malfunctions of the lunar module Aquarius not only surprise Houston, but it leads the crew to experience many close encounters with death. In Apollo 13, director Ron Howard shows that in times of desperation, people must contribute their resourcefulness in a team effort in order to prevail over adversity. In other words, the cooperation of determined individuals can overcome many obstacles. These instances are witnessed onboard the Aquarius and within the NASA command center as both land and space crews work cohesively to conquer doubt and bring the 3 astronauts back to Earth. Many times during the mission, the 3 astronauts are unable to navigate through space and NASA headquarters reacts by assembling a team of able-bodied scientists and engineers to devise a solution. In addition, Lovell, Swigert and Haise struggle with further mishaps and quarrels in space, so gradually, they adjust to life on board the lunar module and work together to stabilize conditions and learn to prioritize their survival over their differences. Finally, despite being decommissioned from Apollo 13, Ken Mattingly more than willingly joins the NASA team in working out a re-entry path and plan for the astronauts.
