The Legend Of St. Bridget
St. Bridget

St. Bridget arrived in Ireland a few years after St. Patrick. An Irish lord, Dupatace, was her father. As she grew up, she became more holier and pious each day. She admired the poor and would frequently bring them clothes and food to them. Bridget was a very beautiful young girl, and her father thought it was time for her to get married. When she was very small, she had given herself entirely to God and didn’t think about ever marrying someone. When she realized that her beauty was the reason she was getting so much attention from the men, she prayed to ask God to take it away from her. She only wanted to belong to God. So God answered her prayer. Her father saw that she was no longer pretty, so he agreed when Bridget asked if

Without Thee, my God, I could never have done it." (pg 67 p3) So the Lord was her strength with Him she was able to carry on and persist through the grief she had from the others abandoning her. Laying in that bed 82 years old Father Connolly came to speak to her. (pg 69 p5) He would often inquire about her soul. But Granny was not at all worried, for her soul was well. She felt there was a road cleared for her that led directly to God. (pg 69 p5) All while she held onto her rosary as people were crowded around her. As thoughts came to her mind, she felt as though her life was still good. Though it was short, she had a good husband in John. So good the only one she would exchange John for was St. Michael himself. (pg 70 p5) As she waited for a sign from the Lord, she thought of what was left to do and what she had done. Eventually she was pleased and waited for a sign from God. But at last the sign never came. God had left her with the priest in the house. This final jilting and abandonment shook her…

The last paragraph of Katherine Anne Porter's “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” presents an elderly woman's journey to her moment of death. In what she hoped would be a time of tranquility, changed to a time of grief and anger. Being the impatient woman she is, Granny swore that she would never forgive God for dragging her along, and then she “blew out the light” (Porter 83). The short story, “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,” interprets the parting condition of Granny’s soul to be the consequence of her conceited attempts to save herself through systems and patterns of religious practices.…

The ability to view an author’s unpublished draft can be described as to viewing the author’s journey can also observe what message is trying to be displayed through the text. Upon observation of The Road and the unpublished draft “The Grail”, I have concluded that there are two key differences that create an concrete analysis of Cormac McCarthy’s progression of his work that show the mother scene shift from mortal anxiety to rationalization of the mother’s actions and reasons for her decisions.…

While the quote ”She would have been a good woman, . . . if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life” (133) critiques religion, it also presents a possible solution. If you have fear of God you can be a good christian, and that there is a chance for any person to be “good” and to go to Heaven; a nice situation for someone after they die. Another example of hope in the story is on page 130, when the grandmother told The Misfit that if he prayed Jesus would help him and The Misfit agreed with her, implying that He is always listening and willing to help you if you ask. Because O’Connor says that they are willing to help, she says that not every piece of religion is a burden or a rule and that faith is not just one way;…

The soul, using the “soul” purposely is something which begets meaning, self-worth and self-compromises in the quest for meaning in a subordinate society infiltrated by the imagination of death as a reality, war as a proprietor to that fact and capitalism as the omniscient being that decides oracles of our fate. In the midst of going through my journey from the fantastic hero, the tragic hero, the saint and secular saint I don’t feel I can comply with the secular saint because of my hardships in accepting the society I live in and what part I possibly play in it. This is particularly evident because of my upraising as a devoutly religious being- my religion and my God tells…

Growing up, Saint Teresa of Avila had a strict father and a loving mother. Her father was always strict when it came to her. Saint Teresa of Avila was convinced that she was a horrible sinner. As a teenager, she only cared about boys, clothes, flirting, and rebelling. When she was sixteen, her father decided that she was out of control and sent her to a convent. At first she hated it, but as time passed on, she began to enjoy it -- partly because of her growing love for God, and partly because the convent was a lot less strict than her father.…

To the average person it was just another day in St. John’s, Newfoundland, however, to me it was much more. It marked the day I would run across Canada, from the Atlantic to the Pacific- from St. John’s to Victoria. As I stood upon a small inlet by the coast of St. John’s, I prepared myself for a journey of a lifetime. I tried to kick my feet into the bare sedimentary rock by the jagged coastline- bad idea, and I’d be needing those feet for a while. After hours of preparation, I was finally ready to go, but my hands were trembling. As if I wasn’t controlling them my feet began moving, and I soon found myself at a light jogging pace. Years of training had prepared me for this.…

There was a chill in the air, just enough to make our cheeks rosy. Every so often the breeze would snatch a leaf from the overwhelmingly yellow trees above, and it would spin downward in pirouettes all the way to the ground.
