The Last Emperor - Essay
Asian Studies 102

“The Last Emperor” was a very interesting film, rich in historical truth and an accurate portrayal of past events that occurred in China during the 1900s. The story was very easy to follow and gave a more modernized approach to teaching the impacts of historical proceedings by using the English language but not forgetting to keep the facts in order. This approach gave me the opportunity to see the different actors as if it were truly identical to what this time period was all about. Given that the plot was centralized around Puyi, the last Emperor of China, and the director did an excellent job making the movie fit the timeline. The film moves back and forth from when Puyi was imprisoned as an older man and then to when he was just a child. The story starts off in Manchuria in 1950 near the Chinese-Russian boarder, where there are many war criminals exiting a train. The general orders the war criminals to line up or be punished. The importance of this scene was to show how stern the government was at this time. The men of order are demanding and it seems as though no one has even the courage to look them in the eye without the repercussions of being punished severely. Other prisoners bow to a man who seems to be someone of importance, not caring of the consequences of their actions. This man is introduced as Puyi later in life and arrested as a war criminal. Puyi, out of fear, cuts his wrists in the bathroom sink as a demonstration of how he knew he started the whole mess in Asia during this time. The story moves onto Beijing or as they call it “Peking” in 1908 where it shows the little boy with head shaven and pony tail in back. This immediately caught my attention from the very first reading we were assigned. A Manchu man’s hairstyle during this time was a shaved head in the front and the rest of his hair in a long braid called a “queue”, and this style had been around since the Jin Dynasty. Next the story introduces

The theme of disappearance in When the Emperor Was Divine encompasses both the obvious, such as their dog, and their father, and more complicated, subtle themes, such as the sense of community that they had with their neighborhood, and their worth as human beings as judged by other people. Their father as they knew him before his arrest was forever removed from their lives, due to whatever he suffered during his detainment. He was eventually released, and so, he was not removed from their lives entirely, but he was entirely changed, coming back a different person than he was when he was forced to leave his family. The most simple of the disappearances that are witnessed in the novel were the loss of the family’s pets. The mother had to kill their dog, release their bird, and give away the family cat, effectively permanently removing all of them from their lives. The loss of their dignity was a more subtle and complex disappearance, though just as prominent, and even more important. The way that they are treated before the war, and being taken to the camp, and the way they were treated by their community after returning are entirely different. Upon returning, they are either ignored entirely, or treated with hostility. Before having gone, there was a sense of community, and the mother had at least one close relationship with others in the community, in the form of the shopkeeper. Unfortunately, said relationship was one of the many that were changed or broken, due to the signified disappearance of their worth as American citizens, and as…

More so than I expected while reading Joseph Roth’s The Emperor’s Tomb was the extent that class divisions contributed to the cultural climate of pre-1914 Austria. While modern-day scholars may be interested in studying the rise of anti-Semitism, especially considering the rise of Nazi Germany in the aftermath of World War I, certain passages of The Emperor’s Tomb show that amongst the aristocratic intellectual elite, class divisions overcame anti-Semitic sentiment. Class divisions were engrained in cultural norms. Manes Reisinger, whom the narrator described as such a good friend that the narrator chose to change regiments so that they could be together, signed his letter to the narrator as “your obedient servant” (33). It is also undoubtable…

“The period of really intense political and cultural activity in the Byzantine Empire began after coup de’etat of 856.” The Byzantine Empire under the Macedonian dynasty reached “military power and political authority, and also the revival and flowering of Byzantine culture in all its aspects from philosophy to painting.” The Byzantine Empire really had political and cultural progress and expansion during this period. They were so superior to “its western and eastern foes” because “Western Europe staggered under the blows dealt by the Saracens, Vikings, and Magyars, and the Arabs lost the momentum that had carried them forward for two centuries.” Therefore, they managed to spread their culture, and “enjoyed the relative calm, wealth, and…
