According to document 5, the description written by Sook Nyul Choi in Korea between the end of WWII and 1950, Korea was actually a “victim country” for the Cold War that existed between the US and the USSR. This could be proven by the fact that people were affected negatively by these communist soldiers and weapons such as tanks and guns. The communist troops from both China and Russia not only threatened people which led to the Northern refugees to escape to Seoul, people who are “labeled” as traitors were shot with machine guns and hanged in the town square for other people to see as a bad example to not follow. Then looking at document 6a, the map shows the result of the Korean War from 1950-1953. North Korea and South Korea were being divided along the 38th parallel due to their difference in supporters and political views. These evidences shows how the Cold War made Korea into battlefields and by the Russians supporting communist in the north, and the Americans spreading capitalism in the south, this led to the Korean War. The war not only led to the division of Korea, it also caused millions of soldiers and civilians to lost lives and which destroyed the economy in both North and South…

Korea lies in the eastern part of Asia. This peninsula is divided into two countries: North Korea and South Korea. Although there is a division of landscape, government, and culture, the bulk of people in Korea consider themselves a part of the Korean nation. Regardless of that, the countries do have their differences. The entire peninsula is cut off from Northeast China by rugged mountains and sizable rivers (Rowntree 365). The north suffers from heavy deforestation, however it has more natural resources. The south has made extensive reforestation efforts post WWII and so they have more greenery. In terms of culture, there are more intense differences. In the South, k-pop and Korean drams have gone global. The culture has appealed to people worldwide. Meanwhile, North Korea remains somewhat in isolation. What’s more, North Koreans attempt to flee into Northeast China, quite often. Yet no one flees South Korea. This shows that there are different cultures and levels of comfort in each…

North Korea relied heavily on foreign aid from countries like the Japan and the United States (1207). The estimated cost of the war was between 67 billion to 164 billion dollars (Fincher 42). In the late 1900s, floods caused a famine and dropped the country’s economy (Ember 1207). Food aid had been provided but not since 2009 (“North” Central). Poverty increased and with the lack of food, crime increased (Ember 1207). During the war, production of weapons increased while the production of goods decreased (Fincher 34). In effort of reestablishing the economy, North Korea reinforced the industry by making them owned by state (Ember 1206). Around the 1950s and 1960s, Kim II Sung visited mills and factories, which had a positive effect on the nation’s pride, it made the economy recover quickly (1206). Agriculture and industry makes up most of North Korea’s economy production (1207). Major industries of North Korea include the production of iron and steel (1207). Other industries include mining and machinery (1207). Most of the agriculture is occupied by 37% forced laborers while industry occupies 63% of people (“North” News). Many agriculture products produce include eggs, beans, and rice (“North” Central). Weapons from Russia and China are major imports of North Korea (Ember 1207). South Korea and the Republic of Congo are import partners of North Korea (“North” Central). Petroleum, coal, and grain are also some of the imported goods (“North” Central). Exported goods include minerals, textiles and agricultural fishery products (“North” Central). For a better economy North Korea is trying to develop new gas pipelines for trade with Russia (“North”…

People have been living on the Korean peninsula since prehistoric times, slowly developing their own distinct culture and civilization. The Korean people were first united by the Silla Dynasty in 668 A.D and since then, Korea has had to contend with the expansionist ambitions of its neighbors. After World War II, Japan had lost control of Korea to its Allied Forces, causing Korea to be divided at the 38th parallel, which is the border between North and South Korea prior to the Korean War. “The foreign administration of North and South Korea was intended to be temporary, and plans had been laid for free elections in the two districts, but in 1948, Kim Il-sung, communist-aligned leader of the Korean People’s Army, convinced Soviet leaders not…

The book I chose for this book review assignment is titled Korea Old and New: A History by author Carter J. Eckert along with other contributing authors Ki-baik Lee, Young Ick Lew, Michael Robinson and Edward W. Wagner. The book is published at Korea Institute, Harvard University in 1990. The book consists of 418 pages and it is more of a survey of Korean history and reference type of book, rather than selected readings on modern Korean politics. I chose this book because it is a complete survey of Korean history from the ancient Choson period up to the economic boom of the 1990's, a span of over 2000 years. Each chapter covers a different period, but they all share the same organization of describing the social, cultural, political, philosophical and scholarly aspects of the period in respective subsections. This made it easier to later refer to previous chapters and compare different periods in order to learn the comprehensive history of Korea.…
