Chapter 22 of The Kite Runner could be considered one of the pivotal sections, as Hosseini both directly and indirectly addresses most of the prominent, key themes included in the novel. The use of narrative devices is broad, using a range of techniques such as foreshadowing, metaphors, symbolism, and literary perspectives such as the historical, in order to present the brutality of power. In this extract, Amir finally faces his “past of unatoned sins” in the form of Assef the most obvious antagonist who now adopts the role of a domineering Taliban official. Hosseini uses foreshadowing of key events in order to create a sense of dramatic irony. The mention of a coffee table appears to be just detailed description by Hosseini, however its purpose is to provide suspense to the section. Due to specific details of the “walnutsized brass balls”, it foreshadows the forthcoming event by introducing the ammunition that will be used by Sohrab to attack Assef. The reference to “brass” also echoes Assef’s brass knuckles, a symbol used by Hosseini to highlight his brutal nature and his violent tendencies; the fear alongside is overarching, as we accompany the thought of “brass” with violence or harm. Another use of foreshadowing is apparent in the extract, as Amir explicitly states that he was unaware that a grape would be “the last bit of food I would eat for a long time”. This explicit, declarative sentence allows the reader to anticipate the menacing, imminent confrontation.
