Many problems arise when people communicate over the internet. In fact, over the past few weeks, with our class communicating via email and GoogleSites, I encountered a few obstacles. It was difficult to process all the information being sent out. I was wary of reading every single post because it was just so much information. I certainly thought it was a great way to really see how computer mediated communication affected relationships. The interesting thing is that my generation is so keen on using facebook, twitter, myspace, etc. But when it comes to something like email, it feels disorganized or confusing to us. When it came to the GoogleSites, I found it difficult to navigate through everything. I rarely check my email and really just use it to send junk mail to.…

Computers and electronic networks have revolutionized communication. “Computer-mediated communication (CMC) was initially seen as a tool for accessing information, but it has quickly become an integral tool for human interaction” (Beebe, Beebe, Redmond, 2008, 358). Without having to bother with stamps, envelopes, and the delay in postal mail or ‘snail mail’ as it is more commonly referred too, millions of people have interacted via e-mail and continue to do so. Using computers we are able to reach the entire world without moving out from our homes. We are also capable of starting computer-mediated communication with strange and new people in chat rooms and dating services without feeling emotionally and physically uncomfortable or stressed. Long-distance collaboration is a fact of life for an increasing number of workers. More relationships are being formed and maintained online than ever before, including supplier/purchaser relationships, student-teacher relationships, and even collaboration between employees of the same company. More relationships are being enhanced by CMC and contributing to face-to-face relationships. As we meet people we often send out a friend request via Facebook to keep in touch whereas we previously may have exchanged numbers but might not have utilized them. With Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, we are communicating more with one another and getting a chance to know people further through these mediums and deciding if we want to pursue relationships whether for friendship or dating. “Our social network is enhanced by the convenience that text messaging, email…” (Beebe, Beebe, Redmond, 2008, 365) and social networks provide.…

Survival of the fittest is the core of the Darwinian theory. This theory not only holds true in our environment but applies to our culture as well. As a society, we utilize technology daily whether it be a laptop, iPod, cell phone, or navigation system. We have seen different forms of all of the above recycled, improved and reused. As our society evolves, more technologies are created to enhance existing forms communication. Past developments are used as a platform for new innovations that help us to function better and more productively. In his book, “Orality and Literacy”, Walter J. Ong exemplifies the way in which new mediums reinforce and transform the old. Through the transgression from oral culture to literate cultures, he explains that you can have orality without writing, but you cannot have writing with out orality. The rise of new technologies and fall of older technologies throughout history reveal a pattern supporting Ong’s theory that the technology, which is most likely to meet the needs of society is most likely to survive.…
