Throughout history, writers have developed different types of genres to help form their own unique story. Different types of genres are used throughout our society today. Both of the books I read this summer, The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver and The Giver, by Lois Lowry both have different genres. Kingsolver portrays an adventure, while Lowry shows fiction. Both authors have applied different types of techniques to get the attention of the reader.…
To start this journal, I would just like to say "Genre Fiction" should not be compared, honestly with "Literary Fiction." After reading the short story by Benjamin Percy, "Refresh, Refresh," I became very depressed. After reading the "Literary Revolution in the Supermarket Aisle: Genre Fiction is Disruptive Technology," I discovered why. "Refresh, Refresh" is what I would call a piece of Literary Fiction. It has merit and depth, and yet so does Genre Fiction. "Refresh, Refresh" is also "Genre Fiction," as well. However, Literary Fiction helps us escape reality as does Genre, but Literary just gives us more problems. Depressing, ulcer-causing, loss of appetite problems.…
According to them, genres are simply “recurring kinds of texts”. This simple explanation applies to things like parking tickets, book summaries, gossip magazines, news headlines, and so much more. As a writer, a genre outlines a general template to follow. For instance, writing a résumé for a job application, or a lab report in Biology 101. As a reader, genres tell the reader what to expect from the writing in front of them. In other words, people who read mystery novels don’t want a non-fiction essay all about the secret life of butterflies. Wardle and Downs also draw parallels between genres and maps, calling genres “maps to new situations”, since both help people navigate in a new situation, whether being lost on the road or reading through new text. Additionally, they state that maps change based on new knowledge or technology, and similarly, genres are “maps that you should not rely on rigidly without thinking for yourself about what to do in any writing situation.” I find this advice particularly helpful, because similarly to the templates available in “They Say/I Say”, genres are general guides but not absolute…
A narrative genre is a type of literary work that tells a complete story. Tate defines narrative genre as “a sequence of narrated events.” As a complete story, all narratives have a beginning, a middle, and an end. The way the action, speech, and commentary are arranged defines the structure of narrative genres.…
A genre is a category of expressing oneself in writing. According to Wikipedia’s list of genres, the genre of Anthem can be viewed as speculative fiction. Fiction is a writing about things, events and characters that are not true. Ayn Rands uses dystopia as her fictitious genre. The Wikipedia also goes on to say that Dystopia is a community that is in some important way, undesireable or frightening. Dystopian societies are often used in writings to raise real-world issues such as, environment, economy, or technology that might become a part of the future. Anthem represents a famous dystopian society. Anthem portrays a future where individuals have no rights, and exist only to serve the state, for the sake of ‘the great WE’.…
Fiction are books that an author has made up, meaning they are not true. Fiction writers have a tendency to tell a story through a character. In their story they have a usage of past tense, as to stories seems to happen now. Most of the fiction books have a great source of imagination. For instance, they have animal’s talk, magic, illusion. Also fiction books are often based upon opinions and nonrealistic.…

Some people would say that a good work of fiction involves some struggle of morality, between good and evil, interesting characters, a foreign concept, or a different world altogether. Even more people, upon hearing this, would promptly list off whatever fantastically complex book they read in their Grade 10 English class.…
Literature is an essential medium for gaining knowledge and being entertained. The expression of human intuition, imagination, beauty, and concrete thinking is literature. Science Fiction is no different than literature. Literature engages people to launch themselves into the realm of the unknown, and it establishes peoples’ thinking. Science fiction is literature, because it has the potential to alter people emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically.…

Narrative can be organized in a number of thematic and/or formal/stylistic categories: non-fiction (e.g. New Journalism, creative non-fiction, biographies, and historiography); fictionalized accounts of historical events (e.g. anecdotes, myths, and legends); and fiction proper (i.e. literature in prose, such as short stories and novels, and sometimes in poetry and drama, although in drama the events are primarily being shown instead of told).…
Further definition of the genre is historically difficult. The construction of the narrative, the plot, the relation to reality, the characterization, and the use of language are usually discussed to show a novel's artistic merits. Most of these requirements were introduced to literary prose in the 16th and 17th centuries, in order to give fiction a justification outside the field of factual history.…
