Global Warming Essay

Just about everyone has heard of global warming, but have you ever wondered what is actually is? Global warming is basically, a gradual increase of the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere. Global warming is believed to be caused by increased levels of greenhouse gases, causing a greenhouse effect. However, there are many different theories on how and why the harmful gases are being created. In Al Gore’s, An Inconvenient Truth, Gore states that Carbon Dioxide, one of the most commonly discussed greenhouse gases, is caused mostly by humans. The Great Global Warming Swindle, by Martin Durkin however, disagrees with Gore and believes that global warming isn't actually as big of a problem as he says it is. An Inconvenient Truth, aims to call attention to the dangers society faces from climate change, and suggests urgent actions that need to be taken immediately. The movie is based on a slide show that Gore has showed worldwide over 1000 times in the last 15 years. Gore's movie is believed to be an advocacy piece that is part documentary, part biography, and part campaign ad. Gore talked about the climate change and how it is and is going to affect the Earth, and he also talks about his life and his family for no reason. In the UK,
An Inconvenient Truth was proposed to be distributed to all secondary schools as a part of an education package on climate change. The announcement prompted Stuart Dimmock, a concerned parent and school governor, to bring a legal action against the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, claiming that the film was political and as such its distribution to schools contravened the Education Act of 1996. When a judge analyzed the film, he found nine different errors. Some months before his case came to court, Dimmock had told his local newspaper that he would be happy for An Inconvenient Truth to be distributed to schools if it were accompanied by another film, The Great Global Warming Swindle, so they are offered a balanced presentation of opposing views. As opposed to The inconvenient Truth, the Great Global Warming Swindle, states that there is no proof that the current global warming is caused by the rise of greenhouse gases from human activity. The current warming is likely part of a natural cycle of climate warming and cooling that’s been traced back almost a million years. Martin Durkin’s main point of his movie was the tell the viewers how they shouldn’t be so worried about a short-term climate change and be more worried about starving children and debt and other issues he finds more important. Whether you agree with Al Gore or Martin Durkin, both documentaries are very political and opinionated. Even the scientific facts in each movie have been questioned. The climate is changing, and people may be causing it, or they may not, but no matter what, people need to do what they can to keep a clean Earth just in case. I guess you never truly know what's going to happen until it does.

Daniel Botkin and Al Gore have very different views on the issues of global warming. Botkin contends that the scare tactics used by Gore and many similar thinking environmentalists are simply a desperate means intended to alarm the public and force governments to take actions that are unnecessary and misdirected. Gore alleges that immediate action is necessary to avoid increases in the plant and animal extinction and the spread of diseases. Botkin admits that global warming is a fact, but as a scientist, he cannot agree on the severity and negative effects of the condition. While both men present compelling different arguments for their views on global warming, Gore has seized the attention of the public laymen by writing books and articles carefully aimed at this segment of the population, producing and Academy Award winning film on the subject, and winning the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2007 for his work in behalf of the issue. Botkin has continued to direct his position to the academic and scientific communities by writing textbooks and scientific articles and avoiding the public debate. Both men accept the fact that global warming exists, but Botkin renounces the gloom and doom predictions of gore and other environmentalists and contends that scientific evidence does not support the fatal forecasts of Gore and his fellow alarmists.…

Al Gore 's film “An Inconvenient Truth” warns the public about global warming, but scientists who are skeptical of climate change have the most to fear -- from politicians. Richard Lindzen, a Harvard trained atmospheric physicist and the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says that the science of climate has become a "climate of intimidation." He explains that "in 1992, Senator Al Gore ran two…

Global Warming is an increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature that causes corresponding changes in climate and that may result from the greenhouse effect. Thus there is no indication that the warming between “1975-1998” and “1975 to 2009” is unnatural, unusual and/or caused by anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Global Warming may have started in 1975, but there is no observable evidence of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emission based global warming began in 1975. Most climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the “greenhouse effect” warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from earth towards space.Yet the big question standing still is, is Global Warming real? Well here's what you need to know about the warming planet, how it's affecting us, and whats at stake. In recent years, global warming has been the subject of a great deal of political…

What exactly is global warming? Do you know the answer, maybe you do, however, taking a pretty good educated guess I would tend to think that most people think they have a pretty good idea when in actuality they have no clue what so ever about global warming. The current frenzy over global warming has galvanized the public and cost taxpayers billions of dollars in federal expenditures for climate research. It has spawned Hollywood blockbusters and inspired major political movements. It has given a higher calling to celebrities and built a lucrative industry for eager scientists. In short, ending climate change has become a national crusade. And yet, despite this dominant and sprawling campaign, the facts behind global warming remain as confounding as ever. Let’ s start by talking about the definition; according to Sir David King and Gabrielle Walker’ s, 2008, book titled “The Hot Topic “ global warming is defined as a gradual increase in the earth’s surface temperature. A more popular usage definition would be global warming is caused by human activity, or let’s look at a more technical term anthropogenic. The debate would be is global warming observed naturally or is it man made? Some might actually take on a debate about the natural causes, like is the sun getting hotter; or maybe the debate would lean more towards human causes, carbon dioxide , here is a good example: the exhaust from cars and power plants that pollute our air. Which side of the debate would you take? One in respect to thinking that global warming is a serious problem, then again maybe global warming has only clouded the issue or in simple terms; how the climate system really works and why man’s role in global warming is more myth than science, and how the global warming hype has corrupted Washington and the scientific community.…

Al Gore is a politician and environmentalist that gave his speech “Climate Emergency” at Yale School of Forestry in 2004. He also presented it during the presidential campaign that same year. He argues that the Earth’s environment is in fact vulnerable, and that humans have a big impact on it. In his speech he uses scientific facts, statistics, maps, and graphs to demonstrate. Gore explains why he used the title “Climate Emergency”, “it is intended to convey what it conveys- that this is a crisis with an unusual sense of urgency attached to it, and we should see it as an emergency. The fact that we don’t, or that most people don’t is part of what I want to cover here” (Gore, 861)…

An Inconvenient Truth An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary film that was produced by former U. S. Vice President Al Gore in 2006. The film endeavors to educate people about the environmental crisis. In the presentation, Al Gore thoroughly discusses current serious environmental issues and their likely consequences. Gore’s argument is supported by fundamental theories, scientific data, and solid evidences. The movie declares that every person has the responsibility and power to save Earth. In order to accomplish this, action must be taken. Though the film reveals several trivial logical fallacies, the presentation is generally funny, compelling, engaging, and ultimately convincing. Although some critics declare that the film contains more bias than truth, Gore’s attempt to inform the public about global warming significantly promotes the value of social ethics. In the opening scene, Gore presents this thought: “You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with the wind. You hear the birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little bit on the river bank. It’s quiet; it’s peaceful. And all of a sudden, it’s a gear shift inside you. And it’s like taking a deep breath and going……Oh yeah, I forgot about this.”(Gore) This monologue implies Gore’s message about climate crisis. The 80-minute-long presentation focuses on Al Gore’s travels and his endeavors to educate people about the severity of global warming and its effects. Solid scientific evidence and significant examples are used to support the argument that society’s continual ignorance and the increasing release of pollutant gases will lead to a fatal catastrophe for the planet. The primary evidence in support of this thesis is Gore’s examination of increasing temperatures and CO2 levels over the past 650,000 years. These factors could lead to several possible consequences. An Inconvenient Truth predicts the collapse of an…

In the article, Gore makes many good points trying to get across the topic of global warming might be a bigger issue than most American think it is now of days. The main question Gore asks himself is global warming real or fake. Gore use wrestling as a metaphor throughout the article. Gore talks about the media on page 2 he act as if the media is a wrestling match against global warming. “Admittedly, the contest over global warming is a challenge for the referee because it’s a tag-term match, a real free-for-all. In one corner of the ring are Science and the Reason. In the other corner: Poisonous Polluters and Right-wing Ideologues.” (Gore 2). The way Gore talk about global warming is that in wrestling you have two people in the ring at all time you have your side where everyone likes and the other side that all or most no one likes. But the issue is that the free- for-all as the side where everyone likes and the science and reason as the bad side where no one likes. However Gore wants it to be the opposite way around to get people to really take global warming seriously.…

“An Inconvenient Truth” directed by Davis Guggenheim is a documentary that Al Gore stars in for the public purpose of increasing awareness about climate change due to greenhouse gases, but for the indirect political purpose of increasing Gore’s popularity amongst the educated masses. Gore’s direct audience would be the liberal thinkers and people concerned about their environment or the future of their family. He asserts that global warming is severely impacting the environment and changes need to be implemented in people’s everyday lives to reduce the negative side effects of the human race’s actions. Gore’s tactics are compelling and highly effective to the point that the documentary received many reviews, both negative and positive, along with millions of dollars in the box office.…

The issue of global warming has become a hot topic in not only in American, but all over the world. For years, many politicians have evaded the issue of global warming. But now, all of a sudden, the Democratic Party vows to combat global warming. Now that the Democratic Party has majority in both houses on Congress, they have taken an emphasis over environmental issues, mostly involving global warming. On January 30th, 2007, Congress held its first hearing about global warming. What was concluded in that hearing was that global warming is a fact, and that it is caused by humans. Al Gore conveniently released a movie called ‘The Inconvenient truth", a movie that showed Al Gore giving a speech about the ‘facts ' on global warming and its ‘irrefutable ' repercussion. Just this past February, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a summary that blamed global warming on CO2 released into the atmosphere by humans. With scientist backing claims that CO2 is causing global warming, the majority of Americans have made the decision that global warming is in fact true. But what Americans are not exposed is the scientist that claim climate change is part of Earth 's cycle, and that it right on schedule.…

Many people questioned Al Gore’s motives for making the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. They wondered whether he created it because he truly cared about the effects global warming would have on the earth or if he just wanted to make himself seem like a better presidential candidate than his opponents. Throughout the documentary Gore presented many facts and statistics that supported his concern, which created the logos for his argument. He also treated the documentary as more of a lecture or presentation for his audience which gave him the credibility that he needed to create the ethos throughout the film. Finally, he used his own personal experiences to appeal to the audience’s feelings and emotions, creating the pathos. In An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore wants to reach a large audience, particularly nonscientists, to stress the urgency in responding to global warming.…

Is global warming taking place? Are humans the cause of it? Lately these questions are being asked more and more by people who believe that the earth's climate is growing steadily warmer at an alarming rate. Our planet's ever-changing climate has captured the attention of those who would have us agree that without drastic modification of our behavior, we will ultimately destroy the world in which we live. However, these activists are using scare tactics based upon inadequate information acquired from unreliable sources to promote their agenda, and this theory of human-caused global warming is refuted by science and logic. The popular belief that global warming is the effect of human activity is erroneous and unsupported by scientific evidence.…
