The Importance Of Staying
Sickness, cold, starvation, and death. These are just a few things we must deal with. It is December in the year 1777 at Valley Forge, a place not big enough to be called a village, 18 miles from Philadelphia. It is two years into the Revolutionary War, my nine month enlistment is almost up and I have to decide, ‘Should I stay, or quit?’ To quit would mean for me to leave and go home to my family, but staying would help my country possibly win the war. I have decided to re-enlist, for honor, knowing we are receiving help, and the content we still feel content. I am Thomas Paine describe the honor we will receive in an essay General Washington read to us. This encourages me to re-enlist because I know that even if I die, I will be honored …show more content…
With Congress’s help we will receive food and new clothing. With new supplies we will become stronger. Fg will be easier and we will be fed properly. I know that because of their help we might win this war. But with so many leaving, it can get harder. Even when it is cold and there is sickness, the soldiers here are still content and cheery. In Document C, Dr. Waldo describes the soldiers after sickness emerges, “The Army which has been surprisingly healthy hitherto, now begins to grow sickly from continued fatigues they have suffered this Campaign. Yet they still show a spirit of Alacrity [cheerful willingness] and Contentment not to be expected from so young Troops.” We are determined to win the war and that is encouraging me to stay and fight. Even in these terrible conditions, with horrible clothes and food, we remain content. I will stay because we will be honored, congress is helping, and we are determined to win. So with these reasons, I have decided to re-enlist and I refuse to quit. If a lot of soldiers had quit then our army would be weakened and the British could have won. I find that my fellow soldiers decisions are understandable, most have family to return to, but I believe not deeing this to the end is pointless, I need to fight

Due to the number of sickness and death in the camp I realize that I need to keep fighting. It is February 1, 1778 and about one-half of Washington’s army are sick (Doc A) During the winter, between 1800 and 2500 have died as a result of illness. (Doc A). Many soldiers also have ripped clothing and no shoes. (Doc 3). I could have reconsidered as to being part of the army because my parents need a lot of help on the burden for the farm and to say the truth the numbers of death are sky high. Also the conditions for the army seem to worsen year by year. Yet I chose to reenlist because helping my team can help me.…

One aspect of this is the inadequate clothing the troops had. One fifth of them had no shoes, and going barefoot in the dead of winter would not have been any fun. (Doc. F) All their other clothes were tattered and did not compensate for the cold temperatures in any way. (Doc. C) The quality of the food and the air inside the cabins was lousy as well. The very little food that could be obtained at Valley Forge was undoubtedly contaminated from all the diseases. The sad excuse for a ventilation system inside the soldiers’ cabins was poor and insufficient, and this probably didn’t help the health issues that close to half of the men already had. (Doc. C) Walking away from the American army did mean that I would only lessen the chances that I would get what I joined the military to find. But between the frostbite-inducing lack of proper clothing, shortage of safe-to-eat food, and smoke inhalation, there would have been enough dangers to make me think twice before…

George Washington had led the Continental Army through battle after battle, and only won two minor battles. While the British set up comfortable quarters in Philadelphia, George Washington had his men build uniform huts in Valley Forge, a few miles away. Sickness and disease ran rampant, and conditions were torturous. Your family is poor and your mother is ill. Since your nine-month enlistment is up, Washington's men are progressing from hut to hut to find out if soldiers will reenlist or quit. The question asked by this Mini-Q is, ‘Had you been a soldier at Valley Forge, would you have quit?’ I would have quit because the British army had so many advantages and illness was almost unavoidable.…

There have been many illnesses and deaths at the camp of Valley of Forge. Soldiers are deciding whether they should stay or leave the camp, but if it were my choice, I would leave. For example in The Diary of Dr. Waldo “Doc C” he states that the soldiers are suffering from starvation and they are feeding off of just water and flour. Also, in their huts there is no ventilation and they have to breathe smoke most of the time. In Dr. Waldo’s point of view, they have been sent there to freeze and starve. To add on, in the Estimate of Illness and Death “Doc A” there has been an illness going around and it has been killing people. Almost 50% of the soldiers had died out of 8,000 people. High risk of death is one of the main reasons I would want to…

    A) Here are the estimates of illness and deaths at Valley Forge. (Dec.1777- Feb.1778) . The total number of soldiers at Valley Forge on Dec.23, 1777 was 12,000 and on Feb.1, 1778 it dropped to 8,000. so that mean 4,0000 people either some died or left. the number of illness during Encampment on Dec.23, 1777 was 2,898 people with illness and on Feb.1, 1778 3,989 people with illness. so more people got illness in February than December so there losing soldiers that's not a good thing. Then people about 1,800 to 2,500 died in…

Imagine you’re freezing and starving, your friends are all sick and dying, and on top of all that, you’re in the middle of a war. In the winter of 1777 and 1778, this was how George Washington and his troops lived. They spent a long winter in blistering cold weather and lived in poorly built huts. We had no shoes, food, or supplies in general. If you were in this situation and you had served your enlistment time, would you re-enlist and go back to these conditions? I personally did not re-enlist because there were harsh conditions, people were getting sick and dying, and we had no support or supplies from congress.…

according to the chart of illnesses and deaths (Doc A), only about 50% of the group has passed away. This means that there is a chance that if I stay, I will not die. Even if I do die, I will die known as the brave Patriot who stayed at Valley Forge throughout all the ups and downs. Here at Valley Forge, we have doctors and medical attention loyal to us. An example would be from the diary of Dr. Albigence Waldo (Doc C). Dr. Waldo is one of the hard working doctors we have, even though he also is going through rough times, he is still helping keep our fellow mates alive. In this diary entry, he wrote that we were still happy. This is a true statement, we always laugh and have fun here at Valley Forge. I know that if I ever left Valley Forge I would feel bad for giving up on our freedom. The nights we were read The American Crisis by Thomas Paine (Doc D) really got me thinking about the “Sunshine soldier and the summer Patriot,” the soldiers who left Valley Forge, the soldiers who betrayed us all, the soldiers who I thought were my friends. “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly,” T-Paine wrote, in my opinion his message for this saying was to stay and fight. As a result, I will stay at Valley Forge, we have a chance of living, medical attention, and I will never feel guilty for betraying my…

B: Yes, the conditions are deplorable. Clothing and food, as well as ammunition run short constantly and the troops are suffering the consequences, but what amazes me most is that despite the squalor they are placed in, they still have great spirits and high hopes. At my last station I got the pleasure of joining in a game of Rounders with the men, it made my heart soar to see them playing like school boys. Anyone to wants to help the troops can get in touch with any local ladies organization, these groups gather clothing food and supplies to deliver to the troops.…

Lastly, I was able to make my decision, of whether to stay or not, based off of the lack of support and supply provided to us. A painting of George Washington talking to the Congressional Committee is shown to represent the struggles G.W. had to go through to get his men the bare minimums that they needed to survive. (Doc.B) Washington is trying to get the committee to meet his soldiers, so that they will be persuaded to give them (the soldiers) supplies that they needed at Valley Forge. (Doc B) The soldiers shown in the painting are obviously not patient and calm when it came to asking for help from others because they were desperately in need. (Doc B) As we watched the congressional Committee make their decision, of whether or not to help…

The first reason as to why i am not reenlisting is because of death and illness. So many soldiers are becoming more and more ill every day. There are about 8,000 men here at Valley Forge and about half of those men are sick (doc A). Also about 1,800 to 2,500 men are dying due to these illnesses(doc A). I know that there is a very high chance for me to get incredibly ill from my fellow soldiers. Furthermore, if i do end up getting ill i could potentially die. Because of death and illness i am not going to be reenlisting because i know that i could possibly get sick and pass away.…

I also want to re-enlist because of the powerful words Thomas Paine expressed in the great book, The American Crisis (Found in document D), his amazing message showed me how much I would mean to my past ancestors, my present fellow peers, and my future family who should grow up in a world without British rule, if I stayed and re-enlisted in the Continental Army and didn’t run off and desert my fellow soldiers like so many cowardly others did in the past, his message was also so inspiring that he opened up my eyes to so many different paths and ideas of slavery and tyranny, his message also showed me how much I admire the things I don’t really work for, unless I stay in the Continental Army, like my freedom and my God-given right to vote on what taxes I should have to pay, no matter how crucial they are to me or anyone else in this…

Our movement may be one of a few days duration and full of pleasure - and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. Not my will, but thine 0 God, be done. If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing - perfectly willing - to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt.…

The soldiers had been promised that the war would be over by Christmas, and by Christmas they had been fighting for five months and were ready to go home. Christmas is a time of happiness; the soldiers have many unhappy memories of the war. If I were a soldier, I would go into “no-man’s land” for Christmas to experience all of the wonderful feelings the holiday has to offer. I would go to experience happiness since after five months of constantly killing others and watching others kill my friends. The soldiers got to let their guard down for a day during the Christmas truce; the truce greatly helped the soldiers mentally and…
