The Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation Careers in Entertainment Tour on Wednesday, April 26 at One Discovery Place, Silver Spring, MD was truly magical. In some way, it really reminded of hillman in the sense that it was a nurturing ground for a dream. One thing I really appreciated in the event and that hillman also does is that it focused on individuality. There was a panel at 9:20 am where different people from the entertainment industry such as King bach stressed the importance of being able to pursue not just the screen(meaning being an actor being the celebrity) but more the pursuit of helping shape others perspective of the world while bringing to them a whole slew of emotions. I felt surround by peers that shared a similar goal (again…

Gordy Klatt is someone who proved that “one person can make a big difference in the world”. In April 2010 Klatt received the terrible news that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer at the age of sixty seven. Klatt released a statement saying “Throughout the years I have spoken and written about how cancer can personally affect everyone. It affects the rich, the poor, and all nationalities and cultures around the world. About 4 weeks ago I was diagnosed with stomach cancer and I have begun my battle with this disease using chemotherapy.” Klatt’s utopian impulse grew even more driving him everyday to wake up and fight the grueling fight against cancer. Klatt released another statement saying “I am even more energized to defeat this disease worldwide. I will again be with all of you in spirit this Relay season – even more so this year. Celebrate the survivors; remember those who lost the battle and fight back! We all need to celebrate more birthdays and by relaying we keep the hope alive through education, community involvement and fundraising for ongoing research.” The vice president for Relay for life encouraged participants to rally around the founder and support Relay for Life even more so by saying “The best way we can pay tribute and honor Gordy is to redouble our efforts in the 2012 Relay season … adding one more team, one more team member or one more additional donation…. and creating an extra meaningful Relay experience for those touched by that Relay spirit…

Health is a forever revolutionizing and innovated subject. Constantly, we see ourselves advancing within medicine due to the demand for it. We run into many medical problems, as well as discovery of new diseases. “The Terrifying Normalcy of AIDS” by Stephen Jay Gould, “Between a Woman and Her Doctor” by Martha Mendoza and “Topic of Cancer” by Christopher Hitchens, help us see this. Gould, Mendoza, and Hitchens bring up hard to talk about topics. Topics like Abortion, Cancer, and AIDs are all very touchy feely and serious things to talk about, but we should not let this keep us from talking about it.…

As a part of the National Junior Honor Society, we are required to “make a difference”. There are many ways that we contribute to making a difference to a cause. For example, we can hold more fundraisers like car washes or even bakes sales. In my opinion, I would like to do these activities to help the American Cancer Society. There are different kinds of cancer, but they can all affect many lives. About 3,400 people are diagnosed with cancer each day in the United States. They are left with the idea every day that soon they have to leave their family and friends behind and there is no cure.…

Critical Appraisal is a means of which research data is evaluated and examined for the validity and quality of individual studies after the elimination of studies that do not contribute to determining current best evidence (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O'Grady, 2014). This evaluation can be used to eliminate studies that do not meet criteria for meta-analysis. Critical Appraisal is used to help people develop certain skills to make sense of available scientific research evidence based on the validity, results, and relevance. It consist of a systematic process through which the strengths and weaknesses of a research study can be identified (Young & Solomon, 2009). The basis for my beginning research has been focused around home care patients and since I have a background of working on an oncology floor I have decided to further explore cancer research for homecare patients. This paper is a review of both quantitative and qualitative research completed in the efficacy of treating cancer patients in the home setting. The burning question is “Do nursing interventions implemented in the home setting improve the quality of life for cancer patients”? Upon completion of this assignment I hope to gain a general understanding of what a critical appraisal is. In addition, a basic knowledge of the difference between a qualitative and a quantitative review will be established. Cancer is a disease caused by the uncontrolled division and growth of abnormal cells in the body. If a cell is cancerous it is referred to as a malignant cell. According to World Health Organization (WHO) Cancer represents 30% of the burden posed by non-communicable diseases in the Region of the Americas (Luciana, Cabanes, Prieto-Lara, & Gawryszewski, 2013). Research articles presented in the paper assess whether or not interventions implemented within the home or outpatient setting…
