The Importance Of Pro-Term Segregation In Prisons
The Department of Justice (2016), Colorado, Department of Corrections (CDOC) found that the number of inmates in long-term segregation was growing and that 40% of the inmates released were from long-term segregation directly to the community. In January of 2014, after all inmates with serious mental illness were evaluated and moved out of administrative segregation. The Residential Treatment Program was developed for mentally ill inmates to come out of their cells for a minimum of 10 hours for structured therapeutic interventions and 10 hours of non-structured recreational opportunities, per week. The goal is to promote pro-social interaction in hopes of returning inmates to the general population. The program’s success centers on inmates
