Pride's Purge The first and earliest use of the term "purge" was the English Civil War's Pride's Purge. Pride's Purge is arguably the only military coup in English history, which had a great impact on England's governing system. During the mid 1600s, the parliamentarians who didn't support the Grandees in the New Model Army, which included the royalists, the House of Lords and the Levellers, were purged under the command of Thomas Pride who had an attempt to punish and King Charles.
