The Importance of Not Speeding & Telling the
I am writing this essay upon the request of the Augusta County Juvenile
Court System. I believe that during the time for which I have lost my license I have learned many facts. Facts on why it is unsafe to speed and on the importance of following the speed limits set. For example, one quote which I found to be very true is, "The faster you go, the more likely you are to crash. The faster you crash, the more likely you are to die." While auto accidents themselves injure a person in the United States every 10 seconds, speeding drivers are the cause of nearly 30% of these collisions. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that speeding alone was a contributing factor in almost one-third of all fatal crashes last year.

One thing that speeding does is reduce the time that a driver needs to avoid having a wreck. This increases the chances of crashing and the likelihood that the accident will be serious or even fatal. Secondly, speeding increases the distance needed to stop, which can easily cause someone to hit someone or something. Speeding drivers also may not be able to judge distances as well and just about anything around them could be at a greater risk. Just in this past year, out of the accidents that occurred on holidays
30-40% were caused by speeding alone.

I think a huge part of speeding by teenagers is the fact that many do not realize just how dangerous speeding really is. The reason behind this statement is that I was a speeding teenager, and a lot of my friends are speeding teenagers. I think I would have thought twice about speeding if I knew what a huge danger it was. Not only dangerous to me but to all the other drivers and pedestrians that could be near by. I believe if I would have known some of these facts or seen tapes in driving school on real accidents I would have reconsidered my speeding habits. I must say after researching for this paper alone I learned so much

Surveys continuously find that although people say speeding is a threat to their safety when other drivers around them are speeding, most people still admit they speed when driving. Speeding 10, 15, or even 20 miles per hour over the posted limit is routinely practiced by most American drivers with little thought to the danger involved. Speeding is one of the biggest killer on our roads. Speeding is a factor in about 40 per cent of road deaths. Speeding increases your chance of having a crash, and increases the risk of serious injury or death if you do crash. The risk of a death or injury crash in an urban 60km/h speed zone increases rapidly even with…

Despite the fact that it deadens a driver's reactions more than alcohol, and in its consequences is as destructive and devastating as drunk driving, attitudes to driving while using a hand-held mobile phone and driving under the influence could not be more different. Distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens. Alcohol-related accidents among teens have dropped. But teenage traffic fatalities have remained unchanged, because distracted driving is on the rise. While over 90% of teen drivers say they don't drink and drive, nine out of 10 say they've seen passengers distracting the driver, or drivers using cell phones.…

Why is this a problem, especially for teen drivers?| I believe that all car crashes are horrible, dangerous for everyone involved, and most likely always preventable. There's a couple reasons why i think its such a problem, especially with teenage drivers because.... Crashes are the number one cause of deaths among teenagers. More teenagers die in traffic crashes, then homicide, suicide, drugs and alcohol combined. Although teenagers represent 7% of the licensed population, they are involved in almost 20% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes.I could go on and on with facts, but overall lack of driving experience, visual search habits, distractions, speed and space management, and a poor driving attitude is why car crashes are such a problem with teenage drivers. |…

Speeding or going too fast for the road conditions, is a major factor in teen crash fatalities. Speeding increases the stopping distance required to avoid a collision even as it reduces the amount of time a driver needs to avoid a collision, called the 3-second rule. It also increases the likelihood that the crash will result in injury. Teens driving 40 mph in a 30 mph zone may think they’re only going 10 mph over the posted speed limit. But that small increase in speed translates to a 78 percent increase in collision energy that’s nearly double. 13,000 lives lost each year due to speeding. Crashes where speed is an issue cost society more than $40 billion annually. In the U.S.A. it costs society more than $76,000 for every minute you gain by speeding. Speeding is often one of several risky factors in fatal crashes, because alcohol-impaired drivers are more likely to speed, and speeding drivers are less likely to wear seat belts. Alcohol, lack of seat belts and speeding can add up to a deadly combination. Young males are the most likely to be involved in speeding-related crashes. According to 2007 NHTSA data, 39 percent of male drivers age 15-20 who were involved in fatal crashes were speeding at the time of the crash. People often think of highways as a major factor for speeding fatalities, perhaps because speeds are highest on highways. But the vast majority of speeding-related fatalities happen on roads that are not interstate highways. In 2006, 47 percent of speed-related fatalities occurred on roads posted at 50 mph or less, and more than 20 percent occurred on roads posted at 35 mph or less. Speed is involved in about one out of three fatal crashes. It is the third leading contributing factor to traffic crashes. Speeding at any level is dangerous. Around half of all speed-related fatalities happen at just 10 miles or less above the speed limit*. In addition to these tragic deaths, hundreds more people every year are injured in speed…

Teens especially 16 year olds have less experience than other drivers. Due to the lack of experience teens…

Thank you for your post. I liked your answer to my question. I agree with you that if one were confident with themselves, they will not “follow” others and therefore the differential association theory would not explain deviant actions. It is funny that you brought up the speed limit question. I was driving home from work yesterday and everybody was speeding. I was thinking of how deviant they were! I had never thought of speeding as a deviant act until the activities inventory assignment last week.…
