The Importance Of Bias In Early Childhood Education
Bias should be avoided to obtain an accurate assessment. Bias can inhibit the child's learning and development, leading to a negative self-appearance. If a teacher is biased toward a child, negatively or positively, the needs of the child are easily overlooked and ignored. A child with special needs may not obtain the attention that is needed within his learning. If the needs of a child are overlooked by a teacher, or an assessor, the child will lack the attention needed resulting in an inaccurate placement within development. This lack of attention can further lead to more serious problems and can soon lead the child to fall further and further behind in his education and development. Observations and assessments should be completely objective, with no bias, to ensure the full benefit a child needs through his education and development. If a child has a language or cultural difference a trained professional, someone who understands the language or culture, should be the assessor. Bias in observation is easy to do, but could affect the child for the rest of his life. If a child needs special attention the teacher should give him the help he needs because responsible assessment is, above all, about the child and his needs to further his education and development.
