The Implementation of Proper Waste Segregation to Solve Environmental and Health Problems in the Philippines

Did you know that “each person throws away approximately 4 pounds of garbage everyday” (40 Environmental Facts n. pag), and that most of these wastes are not properly sorted and disposed of, or recycled? It is evident that the environment has been deteriorating and individuals contribute a lot regarding the environment’s situation. Many people are not well informed when it comes to using natural resources properly and are also not disciplined enough when it comes to getting rid of their trash.
One might ask why there is a need for proper waste segregation in the Philippines, it is because of:
Rapid population growth and industrialization have turned the Philippines’ waste situation into a huge problem. With today’s lifestyle, it is estimated that one person can generate as much as half a kilo of waste a day. The continuous stream into the market of new products that use the latest packaging technology further heightens the problem because new kinds of garbage are produced. Not only is there an increase in the amount of waste; there is also an increase in the variety of waste (de Guzman and Reyes ix).
That is why proper waste segregation is an effective solution that should be implemented by the government and taught to everyone because it is feasible, it is environment-friendly and beneficial to health.
The demanding pace that is required in this day and age mostly brings about the trait that many people possess, which is taking for granted many things they do on a daily basis, like throwing their trash. Because of the need to rush, most people usually just throw their trash in any waste bin or sometimes just anywhere.
