The Illustrated Man Kaleidoscope
Summary:
The story begins when the rocket has just exploded and the crew is falling through space. They have space suits on, so they can breathe and talk to one another through a radio. They estimate that they have an hour or so to speak to one another before they drift too far apart. Hollis, the main character, is falling towards the Earth, while the Captain is falling towards the moon. They are all scared and Hollis kills one man who starts screaming uncontrollably because they cannot talk to one another on the radio while he screams. As they talk, at first they try to calm each other down, but then some of them become mean. Applegate tries to hurt Hollis by saying that he destroyed his career and Hollis lashes out at Lespere when he reminisces about the fulfilling life he has had. Afterwards, Applegate apologizes to Hollis and Hollis realizes that he has led an empty life. He wishes that he could do something to make up for it by helping someone. When he falls through the Earth‘s atmosphere he burns up like a meteor and a boy in Illinois thinks he is a falling star. His mother tells him to make a wish.

What happens to the astronauts as they face their death, in regards to sanity and logic?
The astronauts deal differently with their impending death. One goes completely insane and screams and flails about, so Hollis kills him. When Hollis is in shock he is calm and talks about his fate of burning up in the Earth’s atmosphere without any hysteria. As the shock wears off and he realizes that he is about to die, he becomes angry and feels that life is pointless. When he calms down again he is full of regret. Most of the men accept their imminent death before long and when the Captain says that they might still be saved, Applegate is realistic and tells him that it is not going to happen. They tell each other goodbye before they are cut off the radio. Mostly, the astronauts are numb, but fairly sane and logical in their acceptance of

If I was in this same predicament I would have sent the astronauts with a supply of oxygen tanks. Oxygen is a necessity to live, you can only go six minutes without having oxygen so there should have been more sources of getting oxygen then just from the tank. Also I would have sent more filters on rocket to help the carbon dioxide levels to go down at a quicker pace than it did. Finally if the rocket was to ever have other malfunctions which leads to cutting off of the engine I would have made sure the astronauts had blankets or heated blankets that they can carry on the rocket with them in a time it gets too…

When a person thinks about confronting death, he or she thinks about how or when it will happen. Many people envision the actions the actions they believe they would take, but until faced with that fatal situation, no one can be certain of the behavior or the measures he or she will take. When faced with death, many prominent psychologists believe there are five stages a person endures. The stages experienced are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance (Gould). These stages are tools that allow us to identify what we may be feeling. Not everyone experiences all of these stages or in sequence.…

After surviving a life-threatening experience, many people report an extraordinary experience. Due to the growth of technology and the increased research of resurrection, near death experiences are becoming more common. Each person’s experience during a near death experience may be different though similarities have been drawn between the content of near death experiences and the effect on patients. This could be due to “the subjective nature and absence of a frame of reference for this experienced lead to individual, cultural, and religious factors determining the vocabulary used to describe and interpret the experience” ( Van Lommel et al 2001). Near death experiences have been reported in circumstances such as cardiac arrest, shock in loss of blood, near drowning, attempted suicide, and apnea. After reading Kubler-Ross’s On Life after Death, I must say, it’s definitely opened my eyes to a new perspective, and made me realize, that I too, will leave this earth one day. Kubler-Ross was the first in her playing field to open up the subject matter of death. She was able to bring about her ways of ideas through her seminars on what life, death, and transition is. In her counseling of and research on dying patients, Kubler-Ross brings about five stages of dying that an individual experiences when they leave their cocoon. These five stages are denial/isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.…
