The Ideal Couple

They were a perfect match, like Barbie and Ken. Samantha looked like a Victoria’s Secret model; lean, long brown hair, arched eyebrows, high cheekbones, green cat eyes so bright they looked like stars, and a walk so graceful, she resembled an angel. She was unreal. And her boyfriend? Drew was a Calvin Klein model. Jet black, tousled hair. Tanned Skin. Milk chocolate brown eyes. The guy every girl wanted. Yet, he loved his Victoria Secret model with all his heart, despite her flaws. He would never leave her for another girl-no matter how perfect that girl appeared to be- because he was in love with Samantha. Wherever you saw one, you saw the other, usually holding each other’s hands. People looked after them with hate and envy for they craved the love they shared. Drew would open the door for Samantha everywhere they went. Drew found it hard to find any kind of flaw within her. He never once took her for granted the entire three years they had been together. When she wanted space, Drew gave as much space as she needed. Although, as soon as she wanted his attention, he enveloped her with warm, fuzzy hugs and tender kisses. When it was winter time, he’d make her hot chocolate and hold her while they watched the romantic movies she picked out. Whenever a person offended Samantha in any way, Drew was by her side, defending her to the death. As soon as she asked a question, he answered it without slight hesitation. Samantha spent hours on the phone with him, talking about her countless problems. He was always there, listening, being the perfect boyfriend. Yet, he always tried to be a better boyfriend. They told each other the truth about everything, no matter the subject, because honesty was the golden rule for them both. If a dress didn’t compliment her caramel skin, he’d be sure to tell her the truth. If she asked how she looked, he’d tell her every time that she looked beyond beautiful. However, one day he asked her if she

A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift fits the satire definition because throughout the whole short story the man is proposing real life problems in society and turning them sarcastic. He uses sarcasm to emphasize how well he believes his ideas would benefit his country, Ireland. For example when he talks about the Irish eating their babies due to overpopulation. This wouldn't be an effective way to end the problem but instead people should stop having…

Sammy says “and then the third one, that wasn’t quite so tall. She was the queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making their shoulders round. She didn’t look around not this queen she just walked straight on slowly on these long white prima Dona legs” (201) Sammy was attracted to all three of the girls but the one that he liked the most was queenie. He had a lot of details to describe the way queenie looked and what she was doing. Sammy says “You know, it’s one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on a beach where what with the glare nobody can look at each other much anyway and another thing in the cool of the A&P, Under the florescent lights, against all those stacked packages with her feet paddling along naked over our checker- bored green and cream rubber tile floor.” (202). Although Sammy had never met Sammy it seemed like he was falling in love with her. He says that if he would have seen her at the beach he would have never been so interested it her but since he first saw her in A&P he is able to see the true beauty in her because of how bright the lights were in the…

Bethany and Carla experienced success in Beauty. Carla was a famous, “beautiful catalogue model that was going to become a big time model soon after speaking with Ralph Lauren” (Martin 735). On the other hand, Bethany, the smart one, “received a $40,000 job offer straight out of college. She also published several short stories” (735). Carla was characterized as the perfect and beautiful success story, while Bethany was characterized as the ugly screw-up. However, neither person was happy in their respective positions. Carla was always annoyed, “and always hung by her fingernails in modeling. She felt like she had zero privacy, and guys would hassle her on the street and pressure her from the beginning of a relationship. She never was able to have a long relationship” (736). Likewise, Bethany did not see herself as a success story because, “she did not see herself as a beautiful individual” (736). They both envied each other’s success and looks. This alone shows the reader that the characters were very jealous of each other’s lives.…

His hands started to tremble. Looking up at Josie he studied her. She had a look of pure concentration on her face as she wrote everything down. He couldn’t help but envy her. Sure her life wasn’t perfect but it was a hell of a lot better than his. She could choose her own career without being screamed at for hours on end. She could get one bad grade without being told she was a failure. She didn’t have to be perfect, and she was beginning to slowly understand that. That was something John would kill for. Even his best wasn’t enough. John had tried his best to please his father; he studied harder than anyone else he knew. He’d sacrificed so much to try and make his father proud, but nothing was ever good enough. John closed his eyes and leaned his head back thinking of all the times he was put down by his father. Pain welled up from deep inside him.…

Within the very beginning of the story we see that the characters are placed into a society of which there is seemingly very little value in a persons humanity and kindness, but rather the society into which we first enter is seen as almost materialistic, and even though Egeon, has lost a wife and son, the Duke of Ephesus is only concerned with the money from which he can extract from Egeon. We see here that in order for Egeon to keep his marriage alive he has to pay for his life and so we begin to see the trend of what one can posses in a marriage, instead of love and respect.…

Jonathan Swift's 1729 essay, A Modest Proposal, was a true example of satire at its best. Many readers at the time rejected the essay because they failed to understand the irony. It is presently one of the most well known works of satire and is a classic example of the technique most commonly used today. The entire essay from the title down to the last sentence were meant to be taken ironically, which is a rare form, but very effective when trying getting a point across. This essay will explain why the text was meant to be taken ironically and why Swift used irony instead of straightforward statements.…
