The Idea Of Success In Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is a book that attacks the most common notions to why people are successful. Gladwell presents the idea of an “outlier”, one who does not fit into the normal understanding of achievement, and gives various examples of these outliers. He questions the notion that success is based soley off of hard work and pure talent and in turn presents the idea that a majority of success is based on external factors out of our control. Gladwell argues that those who are the most successful in their lives are the result of the various opportunities, timing, and culture. Firstly, Gladwell and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated both emphasize on the importance of hard work in ones life. Gladwell uses his 10,000 hour rule as his example of what hard work means. Becoming a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated takes an immense amount of struggle and sacrifice. The emphasis of hard work further continues once one is in the bond. Being able to continue the high level of effort throughout ones life truly showcases the devotion to the life-long brotherhood. Both Gladwell and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated promote that this high level or work required for success. Settling for less results in a disadvantage for oneself and does not exemplify the motto of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, “Honorable Achievement in every field of human endeavor”. While at the same time, Outliers also promotes the success of individuals by giving a blueprint into what has made them successful. Learning what these individuals did and the external factors that they were granted with would allow one to better shape their lives to give them the best chance of achieving
