Dr. John Watson is the other main protagonist. He is Sherlock's sidekick and companion. He narrates the entire story. Dr. Watson thinks very highly of Sherlock, being very eager to please him. He is loyal, and is very verbose, especially when writing reports for Holmes. Dr. Watson is a static character, despite being a protagonist, his personality remains the same. However, one could argue that he is foil, as he is dim compared to Sherlock and highlights Holmes' intelligence. Dr. James Mortimer was the medical attendant of the late Sir Charles Baskerville. He has a skull fetish, and is described by Dr. Watson as being "a single-minded enthusiast", for he is easily distracted by the simple mention of them. He is kind and practical; however, he does believe in the Hound. He expresses a wish to someday examine Holmes' skull. He has a benevolent air, and is very amiable. Dr. Mortimer is a static character, as his personality remains the same throughout the whole book. Sir Charles Baskerville is described by Dr. Mortimer to be a "strong-minded man... shrewd, practical, and as unimaginative as... himself." (pg. 11) However, he was superstitious to an extent, having taken the legend of the Hound very seriously. He was amiable and generous, believing that all of Devonshire should get a share of his fortune. He was childless, and a widower. During the time of his death, his health was already deteriorating; he was experiencing breathlessness and acute attacks of depression. Elderly and infirm, he died the 4th of May. Sir Charles was a static character, his personality never changing throughout the course of the book. Sir Henry Baskerville is the nephew of the late Sir Charles Baskerville. The baronet is of thirty to forty years of age. He is brave, and chivalrous. Watson describes him to have some sort of pride in his eyebrows. He is gentlemanly, and keen on adventure if it means protecting those he loves, like venturing out in search of Selden when there was a chance of the criminal attacking the Stapletons. He fell deeply in love with Mrs. Stapleton. Sir Henry is a dynamic character, having changed from being a hale, healthy individual to worn-out due to the fright he had experienced upon encountering the Hound. Mr. John Barrymore is the butler of the Baskerville family. He has been their help for many years. He is very loyal. He is earnest, and eager to please. He is used as a red herring to distract the reader from the actual suspect in the story. Mr. Barrymore is a flat character, not being a very complex character in the book. Mrs. Eliza Barrymore is the wife of Mr. Barrymore, and the housekeeper of Baskerville Hall. She is a loyal and honest woman. She cares deeply for her younger brother Selden, even after he disgraced their family and became a notorious criminal. She is a flat character, her personality not being very complex. wife changed their names to Stapleton and fled to Devonshire. He is manipulative, cunning and very clever. He is a naturalist, having a fascination with entomology. He is self-contained, but fiery inside, only ever showing his temper in very few moments. He is capable of jealousy, demonstrating this emotion upon seeing Sir Henry flirt with his wife. Mr. Stapleton is a round character, his personality being quite complex even though he isn't a protagonist. Mrs. Beryl Stapleton is the wife of Mr. Stapleton, originally from Costa Rica. She consented to pose as Stapleton's sister in order to attract Sir Henry's affections, but even so she still tried to warn the latter that it wasn't safe in Devonshire. She went by Mrs. Vandeleur when the couple lived in Yorkshire. She is independent and strong: even after threats and beatings, she still wouldn't take part in Mr. Stapleton's plans to murder Sir Charles. She was, however, fearful of him, because he was a wife-beater. She is a dynamic character: when she learned that her husband was having an affair with another woman, her fidelity turned to hatred, and she was ready to betray him. Sir Frankland is the father of Mrs. Laura Lyons, who lives in Coombe Tracey. However, he chose to ignore her after she married against his will. He has a passion for the British law, and fights just because he likes to. He is either loved or hated by the people, because his fights can make things better or worse. Despite all this, he is a kindly and good-natured man. He is a static character, his personality never changing in the story. Mrs. Laura Lyons runs a typewriting business in Coombe Tracey. She hates her father, Sir Frankland. She is fierce, and becomes defiant when she's protecting someone she loves. One could say she is gullible, having fallen for Mr. Stapleton's lies. She is quite unfortunate, because both her marriage and her affair with the naturalist failed. She is a dynamic character, for upon learning that Mr. Stapleton was already married, she began to tell Sherlock and Watson all she knew about Stapleton and his plans. The Hound belongs to Mr. Stapleton. It was bought in London from Ross and Mangles, some dealers. It was the strongest in their possession, and the savagest. Stapleton kept it half-starved in order to be ferocious when hunting down its prey. The Hound was gaunt, and a combination of a bloodhound and a mastiff.
