The Travels Of The Lonely Mountain In this case, the movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has changes made to it that make the novel look bad. The title of the book is The Hobbit written by J.R.R Tolkien and the director of the movie is Peter Jackson. A small, peaceful hobbit named Bilbo Baggins goes on an unwanted adventure with 13 dwarves and a wizard named Gandalf. In the chapter, “Inside Information”, Bilbo begins to act more brave and starts to show the characteristics of a hero. In the movie Jackson changed the way that Smaug was first shown and how Bilbo met him and he also made Thorin more selfish and greedy about the treasure, these changes were effective in creating suspense using visual and audio techniques. For instance, Peter Jackson changes the way that Bilbo and Smaug first meet in the mountain. Bilbo and Smaug first meet when Bilbo is in the mountain looking at all the gold and treasures. In the novel Smaug is sleeping when Bilbo first sees him. To illustrate, “Beneath him, under all his limbs and his huge coiled tail...lay countless piles of precious things, gold wrought and unwrought, gems and jewels…” (Tolkien 215). Nevertheless, in the movie Bilbo is walking right in front of Smaug and he doesn’t even know it which is scary enough but, then Smaug wakes up with Bilbo right in front of him. In the book Smaug doesn’t wake up until Bilbo is out of the cave. Bilbo is safe outside of the mountain from Smaug in the novel version as he shows the dwarves the golden cup he took while Smaug was asleep.
