The Highwayman Man
The Highwayman man is a narrative poem written by Alfred Noyes and the theme is Jealousy can resolve to bad things.”Where Tim the ostler listened. His face was white and peaked. his eyes were hollowed of madness. His hair like a moldy hay but he loved the landlord's daughter [line 20-22]”.This is important because it shows Tim listening to Bess and the highwayman's conversations. This is also important because it says in the text that Tim loves Bess as well as the highwayman and Tim told the guards where the highwayman would be.”They gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow bed ...They had a bound musket beside her [line 44-50].This is important because the theme jealousy can resolve to bad things is shown in the text. The

The author uses conflict to show that the individual could not solve what he is trying to solve. In this poem, the character “wears” this anger, which had been passed down from generations, dating back to his early ancestors. But, near the end of the story the poet shows that his “grandfather suffered just as many broken windows, broken hearts, broken bones?” (Kay 42-44). This shows that the main character’s anger is from his ancestors,…

There are several similarities to the poem about the highwayman and the story of Patricia and Frankie. In "The Highwayman" Bess, the landlord’s daughter was not allowed to talk to the highway man because of her father. This is similar to "Typhoid Fever" because Frank and Patricia were not allowed to talk to each other because the nuns and nurses wouldn't allow it because of their diseases. Another similarity is that Bess dies in “The Highwayman” and Patricia dies in “Typhoid Fever”. It also seemed as if Frank was falling in love with Patricia, like how the thief had fallen in love with Bess. In "Typhoid Fever" Frank stated, “I’d love to do that myself, come by moonlight for Patricia in the next room not giving a hoot though hell should bar the way.” My inference of this line was that Frank felt that his relationship with Patricia was similar to the thief’s relationship with Bess.…

Alfred Noyes uses repetition, imagery and characterization to create suspense in the Highwayman. Alfred uses this quote, “I’ll come to three by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!” to show repetition throughout the story. As I am cleaning out the stables, I notice my love Bess, the landlord’s daughter plaiting a dark red love knot into her long black hair. She is waiting for someone by the window, but I need not guess who. For the Highwayman comes riding to the inn, knocking on the shutters with his whip. The shutters remain closed, until he whistles a tune to the window. I knew that he did not see me, but I could see him. With his French cocked hat, his coat of claret velvet, and leather boots up to his thigh, I could see why Bess would choose him over me. With my dirty dark blonde hair, and my stableman clothes, I’m not much to look at. But I got over that as I listened more closely to what the Highwayman was saying to Bess, and this is what I heard: “One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize tonight, but I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light, Yet if they press me sharply and harry me through the day, then look for me by moonlight, watch for me by moonlight, I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.” He sat up in his stirrups and tried to reach her hand, but he could reach it scarcely. So my Bess let down her hair, and the Highwayman kissed it, then he galloped away.…
