Examples of Martha’s Character
What was Martha's attitude and character to Sarah and why was she so cold and hard to her? In The Heretic's Daughter, Andrew get smallpox and is close to death. Also Martha, Sarah's mom is killed during the witch trials because she wants to put an end to them. Sarah's mother is hanged for being "witch of Andover". Martha, for example can be defiant, mentally strong, and she has a loving side toward Sarah.
Martha sometimes can be stubborn and defiant. In one of her quotes from chapter 1 she says “I’d rather eat stones” (Chapter 1 p.12). In this quote she is trying to say that she would rather hurt herself then go to mass. I feel that she doesn’t take her weekly obligation seriously or she really just doesn’t care. The grandmother on the other hand is religious and goes every weekend. In fact she is great friends with the priest, Reverend Dane. I think that this is one of the reasons why she is accused of being a witch. Martha can also carry an attitude and I will discuss in the next paragraph.
Sarah’s mother sometimes can also be filled with an attitude and a temper. An example of that was at the grandmother funeral and the priest said something kind. Martha said “And does not first Peter say rid yourselves of hypocrisy, envy, and slauder lest it bring it ruin the defiler?” (Chapter 3 p. 42). I feel like she had an attitude with him and she tried to test the priest to see if he really knows is faith. Also I think that she was also angry with God to take the grandmother away from their family. You can’t blame Martha for being sad because aren’t we all sad when somebody that we love passes.
The final quote that Martha says comes in the fourth chapter when she stays mentally and physically calm when she finds Sarah in the barn. She says “God’s apron, Sarah, will you smoke us all out” (chapter 4 p.59). I think that she isn’t yelling at Sarah even though you can till

When Martha and Mary Anne are first introduced, they are portrayed as sweet and innocence through the description of their clothes and bodies. Even though Martha does not feel the same way about Lt. Cross as Lt. Cross does about her, he still obsesses over her letters, photos, and the memories they shared prior to his deployment. He believes that she is a sweet, innocent girl because in her letters she “often quoted lines of poetry; she never mentioned the war” (1). Through her letters such as the one where she told him about finding a pebble on the Jersey shoreline and her beautiful interpretation of its symbolic meaning, he is able to escape the realities of the war to a place in his mind where he is at peace and “would feel himself rising. Sun and waves and gentle winds, all love and lightness” (9). The image of Martha and the possibility of having a future with her allow Lt. Cross to not completely succumb to the darkness of the war. Mary Anne plays a similar role for Mark Fossie however instead of providing comfort through words, she is able to provide…

Her friends, however, are not so restrained. After receiving the OK from Martha, they will phone, sometimes unbidden, to tell you how Martha has been misrepresented in the coverage of the trial, and how the Martha that they know is not a vindictive person but a warm and caring friend, nice to her dogs, fair with her business associates, and muddling along as best she can under the weight of all that money and those scoundrels who would separate her from…

Throughout the novel, Sarah speaks for the miserable life of black slaves, and we could learn that Sarah is a character used in the novel to emphasize the theme of power and race. When we look at the page 75, Sarah seems to be at fairly high position among the slaves, but her unconditional compliance clearly exposes the helplessness of the weak’s under great power. She says, “Sold them. First my man died. Then Marse Tom took my children, all but Carrie. And, bless God, Carrie ain’t worth much as the others’ cause she can’t talk” (76). Sarah speaks about lost of her family as a usual thing in a quite tone without any emotion. Instead of Sarah herself, Dana describes Sarah’s emotion as “Quiet, almost frightening anger” (76), and readers could…

I noticed how Martha stops using “maybe” and now uses “all mixed up.” I feel that Martha is like an innocent and wrongly convicted character who feels guilty for something she now feels she is somehow responsible for. I don’t know if the lie exposed a gain of truth or if the lie is so monstrous that it disturbs Martha and forces her to commit suicide. Does she kill herself because she fears losing her friend and her…

When Abraham was assassinated in 1875 she was devastated. She also wasn’t aware that she awaited a trial for the murder of her husband. Mary had been known to take large doses of chloral hydrate for insomnia. Mary believed that she had a brain disorder that made her kind of crazy. But with her losing a child and then her husband being shot you can’t really blame her for being crazy. She had a lot of heartbreak in her life and I think the saddest part about it all was that she was highly educated but at the same time almost mad.…

Main characters, Sarah and Martha Carrier are the true heretics of the story. Kathleen Kent created Sarah and Martha to have personalities that were very rare for females at the time. Females of that time generally didn’t speak their minds; much less have a different opinion of society at all. They refused to believe what everyone else in their lives believed and stood by their own what they valued in life. They were so strong towards their beliefs that it cost them their life in the end. Kathleen Kent even said herself that "Martha was called the “Queen of Hell” by Cotton Mather, Martha was unyielding in her refusal to confess and went to her death rather than join the accused men and women who did so and were spared." (Heretics Daughter, WWW). Both Sarah and Martha never believed in the process of the witchcraft and knew that they were not witches, while everyone else in the town was terrified and continuing to accuse people of being so. While having a different opinion of the situation, both Sarah and Martha always remained humble and kept their dignity all the way to their last days, which is something that shows strong character.…

Feminism is the theory of how men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. In the past, men and women haven’t had the same rights, especially in the eighteen forties. The Puritan society thought Hester’s sin was a disgrace and shunned her for it. The Scarlet Letter shows feminism from a different perspective such as Hester stepping completely out of Puritan beliefs becoming an outcast, wearing her punishment proud, and being a single mother and loving it.…

Abstract: Nathaniel Hawthorne, a writer of American literature in 19th century, was influenced by Puritanism. He was haunted by his sense of evil and sin in his whole life. Hester Prynne, a young woman sent to the new Puritan world by her husband, commits adultery with an English minister, which leads to the birth of their love child, Pearl Prynne. While Hester is forced to accept complete blame for lechery and survive the punishment of her society, Arthur Dimmesdale, the biological father of Pearl, keeps the secret of his sin to himself and is compelled to sustain personal burdens that wear on him internally. Pearl, the product of two people’s lack of obedience towards the community’s rules, is a constant reminder to both Hester and Dimmesdale of their wrongdoings and deviant behavior. Both Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale suffer a sense of responsibility for their actions, however, their punishments are handled in different manners, one through public humiliation, and the other through secret guilt and shame. As for public humiliation, Hester Prynne is the person who must endure all of the tortures which society inflicts on her as punishment for her confession for committing adultery. On the other hand, however, Arthur Dimmesdale continues to suffer, quietly experiencing personal burdens and pain that he must keep quiet to conceal his identity as Hester’s lover and Pearl’s father. Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale undergo very different ways of dealing with the guilt from their crime, but Pearl Prynne is one of the main causes of Hester and Dimmesdale being unable to move past their sin. Pearl, among other things, is a constant reminder to the Bostonian community of Hester’s sinful behavior, while she is also a steady symbol to Arthur Dimmesdale of the secret shame that he is hiding inside himself, while he lets Hester take the blame alone. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses character throughout the novel, The Scarlet…

In the short story "The Things Carried" Martha is always on Jimmy Cross's mind. He constantly catches himself thinking of her. Cross day dreams of Martha often, staring at her picture and imagining her back home. Although Cross loved Martha, she failed to return the feelings he had for her. Despite the lack of love he was getting in return, he continued to hold onto the thought of Martha. With the thought of the two of them together, sharing love for each other Cross had something to look forward to, regardless of the fact that he understood that the feeling was most likely not mutual.
